    3. Hi June Clutching at straws here, but I have a SMEDLEY connection in that my 7GGF, Robert, married Rebecca COOPER in Ockbrook abt 1693. Their daughter, Elizabeth SMEDLEY, married William DOWMAN in 1724. this is a complicated line, as there are several women in it who eventually connect with my GGM, Rachel STEVENS, of Ockbrook. I thought it might be worth mentioning my fleeting SMEDLEY link. Welcome to the list. 3. Yes, this is true. I am hoping that someone may know something of the approx. 20 years they spent in Chesterfield. Both Stanhope and Oswald were in the military; however I've never come across the name of a school that Oswald attended. So that is new. William was my Great Great Grandfather; he and Francis came to California. But I'm beginning to think that possibly Charles Phillipps died young as did the first son because I can't find anything, anywhere, any mention of him after Christening. Thank you very much for your time. I will take this to my local LDS and get those films. 1. [Chesterfield] A thief on Queen Street 1930's
    2. Hi everyone, talking to my father recently he mentioned an occasion when someone tried to steal something from Shentalls fruit and veg place on Queen Street, Whittington. It would have been in the nineteen thirties. He remembers everyone chasing the man along the street, and feeling quite sorry when he was caught. My dad would have been in his teens at the time. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a way of finding a newspaper report about this event. Regards, Alison Merricks Gretton, Northants UK

    3. Hi there This is a long shot and I subscribed to the list hoping someone might be able to help! I am looking for Jeffcocks in the Chesterfield area. I have not been able to prove any of the information I was told that some of the Jeffcock family moved to Chesterfield. Does anyone know if this is a common name in the area please. Or would anyone, only if they have the time, be able to look at any census entries for the name Jeffcock. If I can repay the favour in Sheffield then please ask. Many thanks Karen Hill Sheffield, UK

    1. Re: [Chesterfield] THE BULL HEAD INN...Whittington
    2. Stuart Basson
    3. There were two Bull's heads in Whittington, at various times: one in Old Whitt and one in New Whitt. The one in Old Whittington still exists, and stands at the junction of Whittington Hill and Broomhill Road. The one in New Whittington sttod on South Street North and was closed around 1970 before being turned into flats. If you are prepared to dig through their "Innspire" archives on line at http://www.chesterfieldcamra.org.uk/innspire.htm the Chesterfield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale featured New Whittington pubs in a recent issue and I distinctly recall seeing a photo of the flats that the pub became. I notice that the next and previous households to Catherine Duckett's on the 1881 census are both in South Street, Whittington, so I am sure that your Bull's Head was the New Whittington one. Cheers Stuart.
