Now I can proceed with a bit more confidence in the records and order in the Bishops Transcripts. I see that they also have the burial registers for Chesterfield now so I will order that in at the same time and see if I can find George Woll snr's burial amongst them. Hello Mary I'm not an active family history researcher, so I'm afraid I don't know all the correct terms for the subject! I posted on the newsgroup as my sister is interested in the history of her cottage in Chesterfield (she's trying to find out about all the people who lived there before her and has now gone back as far as early 1900's!!) I now live in south Derbyshire, however as I grew up in Stonegravels I know the churches you mention. St Mary's & All Saints is the main church in Chesterfield, famous as "The Crooked Spire" and Holy Trinity church is located about a mile away on Newbold Road (when I was at school, we had all our carol services and school commemoration day services there!). I've just seen a couple of the replies you've already had from the newsgroup which may give you the information easily, but please let me know if I can help. Maybe I could ring the minister at each church and ask for the details you're looking for? My parents and sister still live in Chesterfield so I could even ask them to call the the church in person. Good luck with your research! Hi, I am researching the WOLL( spelling variants found so far include WHOOL, WOOL, WHOL) family who arrived in Chesterfield around 1867. They lived at Stonegravels where George found work as a striker or forge labourer George and Catherine WOLL (nee GEIS/GEIG) came to Chesterfield fram Hachenbach, Bavaria with their daughter, Catherine ( "a babe in arms"). They married at Holy Trinity April 5th 1869. Frederick ANDREWS and Emma ROE (?) were witnesses. Catherine and her brother George were christened at St Mary's 2nd Sep 1869 (according to LDS records). Baby George died the following year. Selina was born 18th Mar 1871. Selina, Catherine, and their parents are in the 1871 census for Chesterfield. In 1874, James Woll was born and he died of convulsions age four months on 23rd July. BUT by this time, Catherine appears to be a widow, working as a housekeeper. The informant, present at death was Emma BATTER (?) of Barracks (?) Row Wittington. I cannot find a death for George (snr) under any variant of WOLL. However, his widow married Henry Hunter in 1876 in Newbold and Dunstan and the family moved to Coventry. Being in Australia, I rely very heavily on LDS films but I have been unable to get a film of St Mary's records. The LDS catalogue shows one but when you receive it the film number is correct, the title on the film is correct but the records are all Holy Trinity. I reported it to them but heard nothing back. Were Holy Trinity and St Mary's and All Saints the same church? How can I find out about the death of George (snr) when I can't find his death certificate and the LDS church records appear to be wrong? What other options are available to me in Chesterfield (from this distance)? Many thanks Mary Bendigo Australia <mairibeth@iprimus.com.au> List Owner of ASHDOWN-UK Mailing List ASHDOWN WEBSITE http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~rogers/ PERSONAL WEBSITE http://home.iprimus.com.au/mairibeth/

Does anyone have any information on the DAVIS family of Clay Cross? My great grandmother was Ann DAVIS born 1855 and married Thomas WHETTON in 1874. Joy Cropper
Thanks to some wonderful help I have now traced my grandmother Annie Whetton. I am now trying to find any brothers of George or Thomas Whetton. There parents were John Whetton and Ann (nee Statham). They would probably have been born between 1843 and 1850. All suggestions gratefully received. Thanks Christine Smith
Could anyone tell me where I am going wrong please. I have my grandmothers marriage certificate - she was Annie WHETTON, born in CLAY CROSS (CHESTERFIELD) between August 1875 and December 1876 (she was 19 when married in Nottingham on Oct 26th 1895). Her father was George WHETTON a collier. I have gone through the 1837 web records between 1875 and 1878 but can only find an Ann whose father is Thomas(I know this family) and an Ann Ruth who is also the wrong one. I know her family all came from the Clay Cross area as well. My mother also mentioned an auntie Florrie (presumably Florence). Anyone with any ideas would be most welcome as I am now stumped. Thanks - Christine Smith
Dear Graham, Could it be that Ann WHETTON was not named at the time of registration? Or perhaps she had a different surname. In the 1891 census record for the household of George Whetton I noticed that his oldest son was named William Bonsall, age 17.The younger children (Ann, George, John and Mary Ellen) were all Whettons. I checked FreeBMD and found a Florence Whetton born March quarter 1872 in Chesterfield (7b 558)and dying the same quarter (7b 376). Sadly, when I checked the 1881 census, I found Ann and her family, except for her father (who was no where to be seen),in the Chesterfield Workhouse. This may be muddying the waters, but these are some of the possibilities. Good luck, Margaret -----Original Message----- From: Graham Smith [mailto:graham@warmair.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2004 4:38 AM To: ENG-DERBYSHIRE-CHESTERFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Chesterfield] Annie WHETTON Could anyone tell me where I am going wrong please. Does anyone have any information on John WHETTON born c1820 in Clay Cross. I am trying to prove that he had two sons (or maybe more family) named George and Thomas, born c1842 and c1851 respectively. This is on today's Help Desk: Mail Lists: 2004-02-15 AOL rejecting RootsWeb mailing lists email AOL is again rejecting some or all of RootsWeb's mailing list email. The block is imposed by AOL and can only be removed by AOL. RootsWeb will be contacting AOL to discuss this matter though the likelihood is that the matter will take a few days to resolve. Est. downtime: 1 week(s) This problem started yesterday so not too many AOLers have been dropped so far. If you have an AOL account and you notice you are not getting mail from a list, check the list's archives to see if you are actually missing mail and to catch up on what is being posted. Don't try to resub to the list until the problem is resolved. Another problem, I have encountered since Friday is that some of the Rootsweb pages are intermittently inaccessible. We have discussed it in the Listowners mailing list but no explanation has been given to date. This morning I can't get into some of my list's utilites...Over the weekend I had trouble getting into some of the Rootsweb hosted websites. Yesterday, some normal mail to the lists were blocked by an overly aggressive Rootsweb spam blocker. I checked all my lists and found some legitimate mail and unblocked it. So, if you sent a message to a list, and a day later it posted, now you know why. If you posted a message that did not go to the list, email me off list and I'll look again. If you are experiencing any problems, please feel free to email me off list and I will do my best to help you. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

Sheila, I have 4 Solomon Cadman's in my tree, but none seem to tie up with you records. What else do you know about Solomon ? Have you looked at the website http://www.geocities.com/ieldrensecan/sheffield_pedigrees.htm Click CADMAN... The numbering is wrong, but it's easy to work the correct numbering. I found this very usefull. I did not realize how large this area would be to search. Thank you to the kind soul that clarified that for me. I am searching for a great aunt, MARGARET CADMAN and her family. They moved to St John, Kansas in about 1872 after the birth of her last child, Edward Fitzgerald Cadman. Edward's birth was registered in March, 1872 and he was said to have been born in Eckington. Please, would anyone with access to the 1871 Census for Eckington, do a look up for this family for me?
