    2. ConnorsGenealogy
    3. Remember if you are using an automatic reply of any kind when you are out of the office/home, unsub from your lists, or set it so it won't go to the lists and any of the listers. Thanks and have a safe weekend holiday. Just so you know, if I receive one, or one goes to the list, I put the subber on the 'reject' list where they stay subscribed to the list but can no long post messages to the list, until they assure me that they have adjusted their auto reply program, same goes for automatic mail from anti-spam programs. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

    1. OXLEY/GRASSMOOR BRICKMARK
    2. Peter Robinson
    3. Please would listers in the Chesterfield area brave the woodlice and spiders to take a look at the odd housebricks in their back yards, most people have one or two under flowerpots and suchlike. I am seeking a brick marked OXLEY or GRASSMOOR, or something like that. These would have been made by Charles Oxley at his brickworks in Grassmoor in the 1860s-70s. Thanks, Peter.

    3. If any lister responded to my query regarding a Grassmoor Pub, thank you. I have just noticed that there was a breakdown of mailings to me when I was away. I received nothing sent to me between 0714 on 21/05/04, and 0200 on 02/06/04. I now know that it was the Sportsman Inn, possible not the current one of that name. Peter

    3. > > >How do I change my preferences to reading online? > Time for some mailing etiquette and skills. To unsubscribe from this list go to the following website: http://lists.rootsweb.com and find your list of interest. At the list's webpage, you will find links to unsub from both L and D. Otherwise you can do so yourself by sending an email and adding request. Such as: listname-L-request@rootsweb.com listname-D-request@rootsweb.com Put unsubscribe in subject and body of message Once you find your list's website, you can also use the website to change your subscription for L to D or from D to L (unsubscribe from the one you no longer want to belong to and then subscribe to the one you want instead) ....also use that website to view the list's archives which you can use two functions....search by year, browse by month. If you don't know whether or not you are subscribed to a mailing list, go to Password Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Put your email address in the box and then check off, under Mailing Lists: To which lists am I subscribed? Immediately, you will receive and email from Rootsweb with a list of the all the mailing lists which you are subbed to and it will also give you the L or D designation. Suppose you are not getting mail from a list and you wonder if you have been dropped? First, check the archives of the list, using the browse function, to see if there has been any messages posted. If there has been, then go to Password Central and get a list of your subscriptions. Suppose you are trying to unsubscribe to a list but get a message that you were not unsubbed because your email address was not listed? Go to Password Central and get a list of your subscriptions. In most cases, you are subbed to D and trying to unsub from L... If you don't want to receive mail from the list but want to read what has posted, after unsubbing from the list, use the browse function of the archives. If you want to contact the list admin but don't know who (s)he is or don't know his/her email address, send an email using the list's posting address but substitute ADMIN for L. Such as: For Ireland-L@rootsweb.com, you would send -- Ireland-admin@rootsweb.com When using the digest form of a list, remember when replying to a message to change the subject line. Finally, NEVER send unsub messages to the list. The unsubs are done automatically by the computer and you won't be unsubbed unless the computer sees the 'request' in the address. If you are having a problem with your subscription or with trying to unsub, contact the admin OFF LIST. Hope this helps. I will gladly answer any questions you have about you subscription if you email me OFF list. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

    2. I have a similiar situation that I have not been able to resolve. You could consider if he is in the armed services and serving abroad. Do you know what career he was in? could he be working abroad? Is there a chance he could have been transported as a criminal? Has he deserted his wife and is covering his tracks? Have you found a death record for him? Good luck Cathy Goodwin

    2. Simon Jennings
    3. Hi, I just want to introduce myself. I'm Simon Jennings born New Brimington, Chesterfield and living in Perth Western Australia (for 34 years). My Uncle still lives in Staveley and I'm currently tracing my family tree. I'm particularly interested in my Great Grandfather Thomas (b.1852) who disappears from all the cenus lists. His wife Hannah is with her father Isaac Cable in 1881 (listed as married and not widowed) and in 1891 she is listed as head of the house (still no Thomas). 3. Hi All Lists, I'm trying to establish if there was a DAVID STANLEY,who could have been a butcher in Hartlepool. He was born 1832, but have no other details. My great grandfather DAVID HUME had his 7th daughter FRANCES HUME on 4th June 1863. Somehow David Stanley emigrated to Canada, don't know when, got married and then in 1889 Frances Hume somehow mysteriously arrived in Canada and married David Stanley. So Can anyone help with these brick walls. David Hume was a meat and game dealer whilst in Hartlepool before becoming the High Bailiff of Rotherham thanks as always John Morriss HUME Always looking for:-HUME plus ARCHER-Cradley Herts, 1840---BEAL(E) - Sheffield 1880 BROOKES-Rotherham 1860---BUCKLAND-Nottingham 1880 BURTON- Sheffield 1910---CARLTON-Sutton on Forest Yorks. 1730 CLARKE-Myton Hall, Yorks 1825---CROWSHAW- Sheffield 1910 HARGREAVES-West Yorks 1840---HARRISON-Nottingham 1760 HELMAN-London 1850---HOLIDAY-Kilvington York 1780 LINCOLN-London 1850---McBRIDE- Rotherham 1850 SKELTON -York 1800---THEAKER- Sheffield 1910

    1. ADMIN MSG - another virus/worm warning- Sasser
    2. Pat Connors
    3. This new one is not spread from emails but though the internet. It started in Europe and is spreading at a rapid rate across the world as we all wake up and turn on our computers. Here is a blurb from the Rueters news service. > "If you take a normal Windows PC and connect to the Internet, you will > be infected in 10 minutes (without protection)," Mikko Hypponen, > Anti-Virus research director at Finnish data security firm F-Secure > <FSC1V.HE>, told Reuters. > > "It seems to be gradually getting worse, but it could jump as the U.S. > wakes up," he said. > > F-Secure says the worm, which surfaced over the weekend, automatically > spreads via the Internet to computers using the Microsoft <MSFT.O> > Windows operating system, especially Windows 2000 and XP. > > The spread of the virus has been muted so far, Hypponen said, as it > emerged on a weekend, and with holidays closing offices in places like > the United Kingdom and Japan on Monday. > > But the spread was expected to worsen as the work week hits its > stride, Hypponen said, adding he believes the worm originated in Russia. > Here is info about it from Norton's Symantic Security: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.b.worm.html There are two precautions you need to take to protect yourself from these types of attacks which seem to becoming prevalent. 1. Get regular updated patches from Microsoft at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com 2. Get a firewall program. Saturday night, I was warned by my ISP (SBC) of this coming threat. Yesterday, I was in San Francisco all day and when I got home late last night. I took care of my email and forgot about it. This morning I had another email from my ISP and at the time I was reading it, on the radio, they were reporting about the Sasser. So I stopped reading my mail and updated my Windows patches and finally bought a Norton Firewall ($50) and four hours later have all installed. One of the Window patches I downloaded was a program to alert me when a new security patch was available. That way I can't forget to do regular checks. I know virus/worm protection is not genealogy related but since we are all doing genealogy on the computer it is important to be aware of the newest ways to protect ourselves. As the list administrator I believe it is my duty to bring these warnings to you attention. Now, I need some help since I am ignorant on how this firewall is working and getting all these strange messages about files trying to invade my computer when surfing from website to website. The dialog boxes asks me if I want to block the file, and I don't know what I am actually blocking. Does anyone know where I can go on the net to find out more? Thanks. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton
