    3. Hi Liz, On googling, I found a few bits and pieces about the Whitehaven Scientific Association. From: http://www.bookscumbria.com/cgi-bin/trolleyed_public.cgi?action=showprod_5472 about Whitehaven in the 1950s: >> If you wanted to fill your time usefully you might have tried the Whitehaven Scientific Association, established in 1867, but reconstituted in 1950. It offered lectures and outings for a subscription of ten shillings per annum. << From: http://www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/cumbria/1901/whitehaven1901_f.html >From Bulmer's History and Directory of Cumberland, 1901: >> The Whitehaven Scientific Association, established in 1866, hold their meetings at the Scientific Institute in Howgill Street. Here is a museum, containing a large collection of various minerals, birds' eggs, etc., etc. << There is a transcribed newspaper article about one of their meetings in 1869 here: http://www.cultrans.com/index2.php?option=com_content&task=emailform&id=709&itemid=68 Apparently the collections in the Beacon Museum in Whitehaven are based on the collections started by the Whitehaven Scientific Association. 3. Hi Petra, Thank you so much for replying to my message. Yes, I was talking of the marriage of William McMin and Jane Hodgson. I really was hoping they were who I was looking for. Still could be of course, I won't rule them out just yet. I researched Jane Hodgson and found that she was the widow of John Hodgson at the time of her marriage to William - her maiden name being Bell. She was the daughter of Joseph Bell but researching the Bell family has not helped. I do not know of Andrew McMinn having a sister Mary but I know of the other siblings you mentioned, I will try and find out more about her. Andrew was baptised 12/12/1786 Unitarian Church, Manchester. It was the fact that Andrew named one of his daughters Jane that made me think that Jane Hodgson could have been his mother. I know it doesn't always follow but I felt anything is worth a try. The chap who really threw the spanner in the works for me was my great grandfather John McMInn, who although is down on the 1841 census as being son Andrew and Catherine McMinn, has named Henry McMinn as his father on his marriage certificate. I can find no trace of a Henry McMinn in UK who fits into the relevant time frame at all. John went on to name his first born son Richard Henry McMinn so the name Henry must surely hold some significance don't you think? Thank you again for your interest. rgds Dorothy

    3. Hi Dorothy, Welcome to the Cumbria list! I assume you are talking about the marriage on 29 Jun 1782 in Harrington of William McMIN and Jane HODGSON? There was also the baptism of Mary, daughter of Wm & Jane McMIN on 27 Jul 1783 in Harrington. There don't appear to be any further children baptised to this couple in Cumberland, so that would fit with your McMINs living in Manchester from at least 1786. Did your Andrew have an older sister Mary, as far as you know? I see from the IGI that William & Jenny had three further children baptised in the Unitarian Church in Manchester - David 1789, Hannah 1791 and William 1794 - but no baptism of Andrew on the IGI. Unfortunately William McMINN's baptism is not in the Cumberland IGI. There were some McMINNs in Whitehaven including some Williams and they appeared to be Presbyterian. Perhaps the family originated from Scotland? At the same time in Harrington, there was a Robert McMIN, who married Mary ROPER on 21 Jan 1783 in Harrington. This couple had a child Mary in March 1783. Strangely, the only other McMIN baptism in Harrington is in 1783 William, son of Robert & Jane McMIN. Did the priest get the either the mother's or the father's name wrong, or did Robert's wife Mary die and he remarried? But apart from the two marriages quoted above, there were no other McMIN marriages in Harrington until 1812. 3. HI, I am new to this list and was wondering if anyone out there is researching the McMInn family. I have managed to trace back to Andrew McMinn born 1786 in Manchester who married a Catherine Warburton. Andrew's parents were William and Jenny or Jane? So far I have researched Lancashire but recently I found a possible marriage for William and Jane in Cumbria. Could this be them? I have been trying for such a long time but the origins of the McMinn's are proving to be quite elusive. I would be so grateful if there is anyone who could at least point me in the right direction with regards to research in Cumbria. Thank you. rgds Dorothy

    3. Hi Everyone, I am Judy Noel in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. My great grandfather was Timothy Whitfield, born in Kirkoswald in 1855. He was related to the Lowthians, Whythams, Parkers, Sarginsons...just to mention a few and I am going back to the 1600s. My 5th great grandmother Isabella Lowthian married Thomas Whitfield in Kirkcudbright, Scotland in 1773, but then ended up back in Kirkoswald. I have spoken to many of you on Ancestry...Lowthians, Fawcetts, Barnsleys, etc. We are from 'way back', but we are interested. On June 9th, 2013 we will be meeting in Kirkoswald to talk about the history of the time...I'm thinking 1600s to 1800s, but whatever. I will have my tree...please bring yours. And please bring the oldest pics you might have! I will give you more information as we develop this, but we intend to have at least one guest speaker and just a fabulous afternoon of people who like family history. I hope you will come, Petra? If anyone wants all the names involved (lots of them, let me know). I will cheerfully give my e-mail, but I didn't know if that was OK on here. We will have specific times and place as we go along. Regards, Judy

Hi Cathy, When googling for David CRONE, I found this message left on a genealogical forum in 2001 by someone called Maurice Hemingway: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?crone::94.html >> I am tracing my line of Crones. A Margaret Crone born 15 Jul 1857 Maryport, Cumberland married a Thomas Henry King in 1879. Mary was the daughter of David Crone (born c1833 at Maryport) and Catherine O'Reilley. I am sure that David was the son of William Crone and Ann Huddart of Maryport who married 3 April 1828. << Petra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cathy Trewhitt" <cathytrewhitt@yahoo.co.uk> To: <ENG-CUMBRIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 04, 2013 3:38 PM Subject: [ENG-CUMBRIA] Maryport Hi Can anyone help me please. 3. Hi Tam, Dent was originally in Yorkshire although now belongs to Cumbria. The Cumbria FHS appears not to have a publication with MIs from Dent - but that doesn't necessarily mean they haven't been transcribed. It is worth emailing Kendal Record Office to find out whether they hold (or at least know of) transcriptions of either the parish church graveyard or a Methodist graveyard. Good luck!
