Hi I would appreciate any assistance on information relating to the birth and parentage of George WILSON born Hawkshead circa 1805 (possibly the son of Anthony and Elizabeth), and any siblings. This George Wilson appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses at Grasmere, but it is his parentage I wish to conform (e.g. baptism record). Kind regards Stan Walker
Hi Ken, Gilcrux Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts are held at Carlisle Record Office at the Castle in Carlisle. They have baptism registers only to 1861, but the BTs go up to 1875. (Probably the later baptism registers are still at the church.) It is likely that the Mormons have filmed the BTs, so you should be able to get them through any of their Family History Centres. Check their online catalogue. I have no idea about the colliery records. Good luck, Petra ----- Original Message ----- > Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2007 16:22:00 +0100 > From: "Ken Urwin" <kenurwin@btinternet.com> > Subject: [ENG-CUMBRIA] Help required! > > Greetings, > > I am a newcomer to this list and have joined in the hope of seeking guidance > on a particular aspect of my family history research. > > I have found that my great grandfather, JOHN JACKSON URWIN, moved from > Sunderland to BULLGILL/GILCRUX to take up the post of colliery viewer in 1865. > Whilst at Bullgill/Gilcrux his only daughter, IDA GOULD URWIN was born in > 1866. Greetings, I am a newcomer to this list and have joined in the hope of seeking guidance on a particular aspect of my family history research. I have found that my great grandfather, JOHN JACKSON URWIN, moved from Sunderland to BULLGILL/GILCRUX to take up the post of colliery viewer in 1865. Whilst at Bullgill/Gilcrux his only daughter, IDA GOULD URWIN was born in 1866. I have a copy of her birth certificate. I don't think the family lived there very long before moving again, this time to Middlesbrough. In view of the above detail I wondered if the church baptismal records for Buillgill/Gilcrux are still in existence for 1866 and if so where they are held. Also if there are any records still in existence relating to the coal mine where my great grandfather might have worked during the short time that he was there. Any information would be gratefully received. Regards, Ken Urwin, Middlesbrough, NE England.
Am trying to locate parents if possible but due to dates not sure if this is possible of Betty Addison b1791 in Ulverston or Broughton-in-Furness, Betty married John Mawson b1786 but not sure how possible it is to trace them because the dates are so far back. Kind regards Gill
I am trying to find out more about the Viking burial mound in Borrodale in the Lake District. Ann _________________________________________________________________ Got a favourite clothes shop, bar or restaurant? Share your local knowledge http://www.backofmyhand.com
Hello, someone kindly pointed me in this direction. I am researching the families of Steble and Mawson from the Ulverston area: I am totally confused. I have a John Hodgson Steble b1806 Ulverston who married a Mary Ann Ludlow in Beds. They had 3 children. Mary died in 1820s and John returned to Ulverston area in 1854 he married 1854 Betsy Mawson also from Ulverston, Kirkby Ireleith area b1819 and they had John Hodgson, John Mawson and Richard Fell Steble and Betsy Steble, apparently John snr was a Revd I think in the Caife area?. Someone kindly contacted me and said there was another son Richard Fell Steble b1834 but this couldn't have been either Mary or Betsy's child so was he married 3 times am so confused. Regards Gill

Hello again, I have a relative in the 1881 Census for Sandwith whose occupation is shown as 'pupil-teacher at Elementary School'. In the 1891 Census he is 'Certified Teacher, Education Dept'., in Whitehaven, and 2 years later he was Head Teacher at the same school, St Pauls Boys School. Does anyone know which organisation was responsible for examinations and qualifications for the above, and where I can look for surviving records? best wishes Rod.

All wills proved in England and Wales from 18 Jan 1858 can be found in the national index of wills, which is held in a search room in High Holborn in London. There are microfiched and possibly microfilmed copies of this index around, for example at the Family Records Centre at Myddleton Place in London. I don't know whether the Mormons have filmed them. The index alone gives quite useful information, but you can then also order a copy of the will for £5 (there are forms available online, but you have to send them by post). The alternative is (as someone already suggested) to ask at the Record Office that keeps the wills that were proved locally. I think if the person lived in Cockermouth, this would be Carlisle Record Office. Where the will was proved depends on where the person lived at the time of their death, not where they died! Hi, If you are a HARRIS/HARRISS/HARRIES you, or your relatives, may be interested in the following research. There is a project which is studying the DNA of HARRISes (and all variants) which is called the HARRIS DNA Project. A short description of it can be found on Wikipedia at:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HARRIS_Surname_DNA_Project And the actual project's website is:- http://www.harrisdna.org/ Its aim is to give genealogy researchers direction in finding their origin, which is often difficult with a common surname such as HARRIS/HARRISS/HARRIES. Note that before 1800 spellings often changed as people moved around so many people with different spellings of HARRIS, HARRISS, HARRIES, etc., may be related. Take a look at the URL and decide for yourself. At minimum you should do the 37 marker test which, as well as seeing if you are related to any of the existing families, will indicate whether your DNA is Anglo-saxon, Celtic, Norse Viking, etc. As most HARRISes originated from Britain/France/Spain most will be anglo-saxon but you never know, you may well be more exotic. If you have any questions I will try to answer them. Anyway, Best Wishes whatever you decide and please pass this info on to other HARRISes, however they spell it! :-)
