    1. [ENG-CUMBRIA] BIRD family of Cumbria
    2. Steven Bird
    3. Hi all, I'm new to the list and am researching the BIRD family in Cumbria. I am focusing presently on the BIRD family found in Penrith in the 17th c. and earlier, which claims a descent from Birdoswald "at a very remote period," but would also be interested in any later BIRD families also from that region. Sincerely, Steve Bird _________________________________________________________________ Boo! Scare away worms, viruses and so much more! 3. I have also found on the National Archives website that before serving in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, James BUTTERFIELD was attached to the Monmouthshire Regiment (private 5548) - another Welsh regiment - yet he was from Broughton and enlisted in Ulverston (do not know when) - would this be normal at the time not to be attached to a more local regiment (at least on enlistment?) I searched according to the dates / regiment i was particularly interested in, found there was an entry and paid my £3.50 to download the PDF. There is a warning somewhere that many war diary entries (a daily account kept by the regiment commander of activities at the time) can be of little content (location "rain" batallion training" kind of thing), but if you know the batallion were involved in significant action around a particular date, as I did, then the war diary makes quite emotional reading, reminding you of exactly how much the soldiers went through. Details on the information I got named only several officers specifically, but gave detail on locations, weather, troop movements, inter batallion rugby matches!, as well as the battle of Arras initial days for this batallion. What I'd really like now is specific information relating to James BUTTERFIELD's military record prior to his death Hope this helps Amanda http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?CatID=2&searchType=quicksearch&pagenumber=1&query=war+diary&first_date=&last_date=&queryType=1&sortSpec=Score+desc&pagetitle= ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Wise" <romayor2@cebridge.net> To: <eng-cumbria@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 08, 2007 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-CUMBRIA] Military records / BUTTERFIELD > Does this war diary you refer to contain names of the men who fought in > the > Boer War?
