    2. Elizabeth Lindsay
    3. Hi, I have recently joined this list and am hoping someone may be able to give me some help with my 3rd grgrandparents. According to the 1851 Census, Mary Cowan was born in Egremont in 1803, and Joseph Johnston was born in Lancaster in 1804. However, in the 1841 Census, Joseph is born in Cumberland. Joseph and Mary married in Lorton by banns on 13 June 1825. [IGI] He was a gardener and I think he may have been working at Lorton Hall. Their 6 children are listed on the IGI, and show in Census data. Would anyone with access to the marriage entries for Lorton be able to let me know if there is birth information for either Mary or Joseph please? I haven't found any way to identify either of these two people so that I can trace the next generation. Regards, Elizabeth

    1. [ENG-CUMBRIA] when you can't find a birth registration
    2. Liz Vincent
    3. Hi all Thought this might help those looking for a birth registration that just isn't there. I have been researching HALLIFAX from Wigton. I am descended from Samuel HALLIFAX's daughter Mary. One son of Samuel, John had a son Joseph, now Joseph who was a C/E minister married Clara HARDWICKE and they had 11 children. I found them all on the census entries at his various parishes. However I only found one child registered under a first name and eventually when doing a blanket search for births for HALLIFAX in the areas I knew they lived, 9 children came up as female or male HALLIFAX fitting in with ages on the various census. One seems to have missed the boat altogether. Usually you imagine this registration is when a child dies but these didn't. He obviously had trouble making decisions. Well he did choose names like Octavious and Septimus. Even stranger was on each census entry Joseph was there stating he was married with all the kids, nursemaids etc but no sign of Clara. I eventually found Clara at her mother's house for all the census dates. Well I guess every mum with 11 kids needs a break every census taking. Regards Liz Vincent 02 4677 2044 / 0419 003 806 P.O.
