Hi Paul I find that Frith's search engine needs to be sneaked up on. Type in BRAMPTON CUMBERLAND or BRAMPTON CUMBRIA, and it thinks that is has no villages or towns with those double-barrelled names (it doesn't seem to accept commas, either!. But type in BRAMPTON, and it lists seven different villages, including two in Cumbria. Part of the problem is that it uses modern county names, not the old ones, so it uses Cumbria (comprising Cumberland and Westmorland), not the two older ones. Grrrrr! In fact, Frith seems to have no photographs of Brampton near Appleby, but does have seven photos of the other Brampton; so it might be worth trying again. He was a Master Mariner, qualifying in 1877. From 1877-1884 he was First Mate on sailing ships, Comorin, Knight of the Garter and Indian Empire. Emigrating to Australia as First Mate on the Indian Empire in 1884. He became a river Captain on the Fitzroy River. The last I heard of him was a census recording his residence in Redbank, Meatworks in 1903. Thankyou for helping me solve the puzzle of his life. Is there a photo of his grave or obituary?
