    3. Hi Paul I find that Frith's search engine needs to be sneaked up on. Type in BRAMPTON CUMBERLAND or BRAMPTON CUMBRIA, and it thinks that is has no villages or towns with those double-barrelled names (it doesn't seem to accept commas, either!. But type in BRAMPTON, and it lists seven different villages, including two in Cumbria. Part of the problem is that it uses modern county names, not the old ones, so it uses Cumbria (comprising Cumberland and Westmorland), not the two older ones. Grrrrr! In fact, Frith seems to have no photographs of Brampton near Appleby, but does have seven photos of the other Brampton; so it might be worth trying again. Good luck Peter Peter B Freshwater MA, DipLib, FSA Scot 43 Corstorphine Road Murrayfield Edinburgh EH12 5QQ Telephone: 0044 (0)131 337 7049 Email: peter@hillfoot.demon.co.uk On 02/03/2012 08:21, Paul Brookes wrote: > Hi Peter and Les, > I tried Francis Frith.com and it said 'We have no photos of Brampton, although we do have photos of these nearby places:' Also, Googling it comes up with no pictures either. 2. Paul Brookes
    3. Hi William and Petra, Thankyou for your marvellous work on my behalf. You have provided some of the final prices to the jigsaw of Charles life. I have been searching for the past year for his death. He was a Master Mariner, qualifying in 1877. From 1877-1884 he was First Mate on sailing ships, Comorin, Knight of the Garter and Indian Empire. Emigrating to Australia as First Mate on the Indian Empire in 1884. He became a river Captain on the Fitzroy River. The last I heard of him was a census recording his residence in Redbank, Meatworks in 1903. Thankyou for helping me solve the puzzle of his life. Is there a photo of his grave or obituary? Also, in which church graveyard is the MI? Thankyou again for your invaluable help. Kind Regards, Paul

    3. Thanks for the tips, Petra. Judy -----Original Message----- From: eng-cumbria-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-cumbria-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Petra Mitchinson Sent: February-24-12 9:50 AM To: eng-cumbria@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-CUMBRIA] Thomas Whitfield 1751 - 1827 Hi Judy, Sounds as if your Thomas was a guy who liked to travel! All the harder to find his place of birth then. Have you searched the IGI for possible candidates? The problem is that he could have been born in Scotland or Cumberland or elsewhere. If there are several candidates, it can help to have a closer look at each of them and whittle them down by excluding some of the candidates - e.g. if they died or are accounted for elsewhere. The names of Thomas' children may be helpful for homing in on the correct set of parents for Thomas. The Scottish naming patterns, often also adhered to in Cumberland, stipulate that the eldest son of the couple is named after father's father, and the second daughter after father's mother. This is NOT a foolproof system for working out someone's parents as the couple may not have strictly adhered to the pattern, or they named a child after a recently deceased relative, or both parents' mothers had the same first name! Once you have the reduced the number of possible candidates, it is worth looking for wills of possible fathers of your Thomas to see whether there is a clue in the wills. Good luck! 3. Hi to the Lists, by now, if you subscribe to this list and a few select others, you are aware that ancestry has had problems since Nov 24th 2011. They are not updating their website which means any new info you put in or if you change your tree from public to private, or if you change your tree name, your tree will NOT pop up when someone, ANYONE, does a search. Well, I have been getting email answers from ancestry and I can't believe how stupid (I'm sorry for saying this but what other word should I use as it fits) these people are. Here is the latest email from them telling me that all I have to do is give my user name to everyone under the sun and they will be able to see my tree. " Dear Nancy, Thank you for contacting Ancestry. I understand that your tree will not show up in a general search. I was just informing you that your tree can still be found on Ancestry.com if someone knows your username. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know." I've decided to ask them to send ALL their members my username. This gets a DOH from me. nancy
