    1. [CUL-COP] Kirkgate, Cockermouth in 1871 (GOULDING)
    2. Zimmer House
    3. Hi, I wonder if anyone can provide details about the Kirkgate area of Cockermouth around 1871? At the time, my gg-grandfather, William GOULDING lived there with his two youngest children, Margaret Ann and John. He also died there on January 2, 1872. I think Kirkgate is located in the shadows of All Saints and I've even walked all about that area but I didn't know my ancestor lived there at the time. Several web sites seem to indicate that today it is a building or area devoted to the arts. I'm wondering what it was like when my ancestors actually lived there. I suspect when they did, they had probably fallen on hard times since William's health likely kept him from working as a Clogger. The 1871 census record simply indicates "Kirkgate" and no additional street information is given. If anyone has researched Kirkgate and can share information, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance. Regards, Roger Park Atlanta, Georgia USA zimmerhouse@bellsouth.net
