The 1828 29 Pigot Commercial Directory shows 4 listings for Jefferson on Lowther Street Whitehaven. I am familiar with 3 of these: a.. Nobility, Gentry, Clergy Jefferson, Hen. esq. 80 Lowther b.. Merchants & Ship Owners Jefferson, H&R (West India) Low- c.. Wine & Spirit Merchants Jefferson, Hen. & Sons Lowther St. The other listing is as follows: a.. Roman Cement Dealers Jefferson & Sons, Lowther St. Of course, my question is whether this is the same Jefferson & Sons that sells wine and trades with the West Indies? One clue might be that the first three Jefferson entries all have at least the initial H of Henry in the entry -- but that may not mean anything. My Concise Oxford Dictionary says that Roman Cement is the trade name for a hydraulic cement named after the ancient Roman kind. Under hydraulic cement, the Concise says "hardening under water", which leads me to believe that a Roman Cement Dealer was probably involved in waterfront projects. _____________________ Tim Anderson Gaithersburg, Maryland
