Just received the death certificate for David "Mc Clean" father of Jane (McLean) Carlton. David died in 1839 and the surname is "Mc Clean". I have seen Jane listed as a Mc Clean and as a McLean. Jane's youngest son (born June 1856 and died 17 March 1860) was listed on his death certificate as Stewart "McLean'" Carlton. In just 21 years the surname dropped the 2nd "C". Which is comparable to the Carltons - in roughly the same time period, my line, went from Carleton to Carlton. David
