"One of the sponsors at William's baptism in 1712 was a Mr. Ponsonby of Hale." (I refer to the Dr. William Brownrigg (1712-1800), who was born at High Close Hall, Plumbland and died at Ormathwaite). Gyles Brownrigg, a relative of Dr. William Brownrigg, supposedly married a Miss Barrett/Barnett of the younger branch of Lord Bessborough's family. She may have been connected to the Ponsonbys.
