When Joseph Dudley, ironmonger, of Whitehaven died in 1749, an extensive inventory of his possessions was made, stretching to some six pages and coming to the grand total of £1028 2s 1 1/4d Here are some items on the first page, to give you a flavour of what the Whitehaven middle class were buying.
