As a form of remembrance, you may wish to post names or biographies of any Cumbrians killed in action. I suggest that this should include not only the dead of the wars of the 20th century, but also those of previous conflicts; and any Cumbrians who may have been caught up in recent acts of terrorism. I hope someone out there can help me with this one! >From his death certificate I have the following information: Henry Thomas (my paternal g-g-grandfather) died 30th August 1880, at No 12 Pit Cro??field Cleator Moor, [I thought this might have been Crossfield but doesn't look like ss]. "Accidentally killed by falling down pit". He was an Iron Pit something at the time. [My eyes are getting worse!!] Inquests were held 30th August and 1st September with the certificate received from H J Whiteside deputy coroner for the Lordship[?] of Egremont. He left a wife Isabella and children Alfred Forrester Thomas b1874 (g-grandfather), William b1872, Justus b1877, Marrion b 1879 and Isabella b1881. At the time of the 1881 census, the widow and children were living in Cleator. My problem is I do not know where he was born, although I do know from his death certificate that he was 34, which would make it about 1846. Family tradition has the Thomas family originally coming from Cornwall and he could have been the first 'Thomas' to move into Cumberland. If anyone has access to the 1871 census for Cleator/Moor Row area could they please look up this family for me? Also, can anyone tell me where I could get more information about the accident that caused his death? Joyce Sinclair Perth, Western Australia

This is a handy tool I've just discovered makes life easier: When you learn how to translate a problem into keywords and symbols to use in a search engine (let's say Google at www.google.com), the keys to the Internet are yours. Here is how it works: The plus (+) symbol forces a key word to be INCLUDED. The staple of genealogy research is vital records -- when our ancestors were born, died, and married -- so a search with any surname and these keywords work well: Example: +ragan +born. You can use the keyword "died" or "married" in the spot where "born" is in the above example. The minus (-) symbol forces a keyword to be EXCLUDED. This is an extremely powerful research tool when you learn how to use it properly with the plus symbol. One of the variant spellings of my surname is REAGAN. What do you think happens when you start doing searches with this name? Many of the "hits" or "results" that come back are about former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Here is how to fix it: Use: +reagan +born -president. The word "president" will not be in any of my results. Get the idea? What if the surname was "Morse" or "Cook"? Here are example of searches that you might do using the symbols: Search: +morse +married -code (the word "code" is excluded because of "morse code"). Try: +cook +died -food -chef (the words "food" and "chef" are excluded). Fine Tune Your Searches: Count on doing a search from three to five times. Each time you click on the "Search" button examine the results and see if there are any other keywords you can include or exclude. Don't worry about a large amount of results. What matters is the top 10 or 20 -- ignore the rest and start fine tuning. This way you really can find the needle in the haystack. You will be able to get the good stuff to come to the top like cream floats to the top of Grandpa's milk pail. Pam

The death of Janet Pearson, widow, of Fangs in Loweswater in 1649 must have been an event of some local importance. Her probate inventory was valued at £305 6s 2d, a considerable sum for a widow whose eldest son had probably already inherited the larger part of his father's estate. The inventory is remarkably detailed. I'm listing all the debts from it, as they may shed some light on what 'debts' might hide in other less thorough inventories [comments in square brackets are my thoughts]. Debts oweing by the said testator with specialtie [speciality was a signed written 'special' contract] To Margaret Allason widdow £21 17s 0d [this is so huge that I'm presuming it refers to some earlier inheritance that Margaret and Janet shared. I'm guessing that they were sisters. Probably Janet had the land and was required to pay Margaret her due share in due course] To the Earl of Northumberland for a fine £6 0s 0d [maybe the 'fine' that she had to pay on admission after her husband died?] Debts oweing by the said testator without specialtie To Margaret Allason £1 3s 0d To John Rudd for grassing £0 12s 0d To Henry Jackson of Stainburne for grassing £0 8s 0d To John Fearon of Soskell £1 0s 0d To Mr Lawson for land rent £0 3s 5d [possibly steward to the Earl of Northumberland?] To her son William Pearson for land rent £2 10s 0d [see, he had already inherited] To her son William more £0 4s 0d To Thomas Iredell of the Iredell £2 10 0d Ellen Peirson of Fangs widdow £0 3s od [her mother-in-law?] Mathew Peirson her son £0 3s 0d John Peirson her son £0 7s inkblot Agnes Jackson of Hall £0 5s 0d Agnes Iredell £0 5s 0d [do these two entries suggest that they were providing the same service. Any thoughts?] Elsabeth Walker for wages £0 3s 0d To the Constable William Burnyeate in Arrears for taxes £inkblot 14s 5d To Richard Peile for weaving £0 2s 8d Robert Biglands for two ?? £0 1s 0d William Bell for mowing £0 inkblot inkblot Thomas Dixon Smith for work £0 6s 4d Henry Jackson wife for drink £0 0s 6d Thomas Jackson Smith for work £0 1s 4d paid for her son Thomas Apparrell the testator was bound to find the same during his time of apprenticeship £0 18s 9d [the way the entries are squeezed together suggests that son Thomas was apprentice to Thomas Jackson] To Peter Robinson for one peaxe of [sheep/shoes?? walling/walking???] £0 0s 6d Funeral Expenses £1 10s 0d To John Sponser wife for spinning £1 5s 3d [prized by John Tyffin, John Johnson, Thomas Iredell and John Woodall] Inventories rarely give this amount of detail. What this does show is that long lists don't necessarily indicate money-lending, but just the ordinary day-to-day business of a busy and complex community. Chris chris@dickinson.uk.net

Hi, I wonder if anyone can provide details about the Kirkgate area of Cockermouth around 1871? At the time, my gg-grandfather, William GOULDING lived there with his two youngest children, Margaret Ann and John. He also died there on January 2, 1872. I think Kirkgate is located in the shadows of All Saints and I've even walked all about that area but I didn't know my ancestor lived there at the time. Several web sites seem to indicate that today it is a building or area devoted to the arts. I'm wondering what it was like when my ancestors actually lived there. I suspect when they did, they had probably fallen on hard times since William's health likely kept him from working as a Clogger. The 1871 census record simply indicates "Kirkgate" and no additional street information is given. If anyone has researched Kirkgate and can share information, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance. Regards, Roger Park Atlanta, Georgia USA zimmerhouse@bellsouth.net

Hi Chris, I have tried to access both the URLs but all I get is that little hour glass that just keeps on tumbling. Being very much a senior / newbie at both genealogy and computers, I am not sure if my javascript or cookies are on or not. Is it possible that is why I seem to be unable to access? If this is considered off topic for this list, my apologies. Perhaps you could direct me to a list that would explain how to determine if cookies or javascript is on/off. I have Windows XP, OE 6, Internet Explorer with hi-speed cable. Roy Mississauga-Canada
