    3. Ann -- Thanks, I read it from cover to cover yesterday and then sent it back (I had it on interlibrary loan from Harvard). I found this book by Rev. A. Neville Rigg to be extremely well researched. He cites primary sources as well as such things as unpublished Ph.D. dissertations. There are page after page of names and dates. I would think that someone (or group) interested in Cumbrian genealogy might want to consider making a reprint of this book (with whatever arrangements are appropriate with the author and his solicitors). I have found an email address for Michael Moon and will make an inquiry there. 2. Gerald Sandwith
    3. Hi Everyone A while ago I enquired about a John Bigrigg in Cockermouth who was a journeyman Clogger and his wife Mary Ann. Thank you all who replied, unfortunately the information which you were able to give me related to, I think his cousin. We have however got a slim lead which we are following but if this fails I will be back pleading again. Secondly in the Princpal Inhabitants of Cumberland 1847 several Sandwith,s are listed. Geo Sandwith a Shoemaker of Holme side Irton interests me and I would like to trace whether he married. If so could anyone confirm if she was Margaret (Peggy) Southward. If anyone who has not contacted me has any Sandwith's marrying their ancestors would they please contact me with info. Thanks Gerald Sandwith _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

    2. Dave Banks
    3. Thanks Ann, Sarah Reveley from the CUMBERLAND List has scanned extracts from her copy of the first book, and the Whitehaven CRO has the second, which I am using currently. I have written a paper about Brownrigg from various sources, and a little on Wood and Anthony Bacon, followed up by an attempt to prove that a local building may be Brownrigg's laboratory. I also have a photograph of this building as it was in 1929, and as it is now. If anyone is interested in any of this I can forward it on, and if we get the go ahead to dig it out and interpret it, volunteers would be welcome. 3. Hello list, I am looking for a kind soul who might give me some help. I thought I would try this list for a change as opposed to the cumberland list. A kind lady on the Cumberland list found this for me: ROBERT PERIE. born 23.10.1766, St Nicholas, Whitehaven, Cumberland. Son of Mary Perie Does anyone have access to the parish records from St Nicholas and perhaps look this entry up to see what other information might be had. It doesnt sound as if the father was put in the record. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you Carol/NZ

    3. Might be worth saying that the survival rate among illegitimate children wasn't nearly as high as among legitimate ones. Whether that was deliberate neglect or a natural consequence of a lack of family and/or financial support, I wouldn't like to say. Anyway, always check the burial registers after an illegitimate baptism. Chris chris@dickinson.uk.net

Son of Mary Perie >Does anyone have access to the parish records from St Nicholas and perhaps look this entry up to see what other information might be had. It doesnt sound as if the father was put in the record. Any help greatly appreciated. The Whitehaven and St Bees records aren't wonderful. There tend to be very few extra details. These records have been published and one of our subscribers, at least, has a copy, but she won't be around for another couple of weeks at least. I can do a look up the nest time I'm at the SOG in London, possibly on Friday but maybe not till later. You've probably considered these options already, but just some thoughts ... The entry sounds as though Robert was illegitimate and that Perie was Mary's maiden name. There are Mary Perry IGI baptisms in Cockermouth and Workington that would fit the bill, but I couldn't see anything for Whitehaven. That Robert was illegitimate would seem likely as Mary Perie would appear to have had another fatherless child in 1759 (Betty). So one possibility is that she was, ahem, providing intimate services for the sailors of the town, and made a couple of mistakes. Another alternative is that Mary was a widow, her husband having just died. Such posthumous births often just list the mother's name. So looking at the burial register for that year might give you the husband's name, if you are lucky. Of course, he may well have been a sailor that died at sea. There is a John Peary who married Mary Burges in 1751; but I can't see any other baptisms with these listed as parents. Another possibility is that the child was illegitimate but she married the father later. Worth looking at later marriages. I don't like to say this, but I strongly suspect that you are going to come to a dead end on the father here. I think it's likely to be the 'couple of mistakes' scenario, and she may well have had no idea who the father was. Chris chris@dickinson.uk.net

    3. Hi Carol........ I looked and I still have my emails when I looked once before for you in the St. Nicholas parish records. I couldn't find anything on him then, but did someone else find something? As Chris says, there is not a lot of info in the old parish records. For my brick wall, I just have a name and date for his burial. No birth that I can find. But it would have been nice if they gave 'next of kin' or age or something. Let me know if you want another lookup.......I will be going back next Wednesday. And I do have that parish film on indefinite loan. Cheers.....Heather (was I the 'kind lady from another list'???) Grin. Don't think so, as I couldn't find any more info for you. > Hello list, > > I am looking for a kind soul who might give me some help.
