    3. Dear List, The PRO files have revealed that my GGGF, James TELFORD, was born Aug 1800 in St Cuthbert's Parish, Carlisle. He joined the Royal Sappers as a drummer in 1810. Eventually his unit was stationed at Quebec City, where he married Mary Ann NUGENT in 1825. My GGF, William TELFORD was born in Quebec in 1826. When the Citadel construction was completed, his Company was returned to England. James elected to remain with his family in No America. They eventually settled in NY, where James died in 1853. I am searching for info on the parents and siblings of James in the Carlisle area. I suspect his father's name was likely William, from naming patterns. Will appreciate any info or comments. Thanks! Robert Telford Melbourne, FL USA

    3. Hello Robert, The IGI has the following entry.... James TELFORD, baptised 04 JAN 1801 Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle, Father: WILLIAM TELFORD Mother: MARY BOOTHMAN A search using those parents turned up James as the only one listed . There was a trend during that time to list baptisms as (for example) X the son of A Smith, labourer of Carlisle and B his wife formerly Jones and the transcribers for the IGI recorded the parents as A Smith and B Jones.
