Hello, Is / was there a difference between a "mariner" and a "sailor" in the period around 1760 in Cumberland ? If I found a John Smith described as a "mariner" in a BT entry and 5 years later another John Smith called a "sailor" are they different people or is there a chance they are the same person ? I know there are "seamen" and "able bodied seamen" and they are different. The sequence was "mariner" in 1765 and "sailor" in 1782. David
