Hello, I just found (actually refound buried under dust) the (U.S.) naturalization papers for Jane (Trimble) Carlton. Like all records they got more detailed as they evolved. While her husband and father-in-law came ahead to get settled, she and her 5 daughters stayed with her sister named "Bella" in Carlisle. The naturalization states she left Liverpool 21 June 1881, arrived New York 12 July and arrived Colorado 1 Aug. (took longer by land than by sea!) The Genuki site says the 1881 census was 3 April but I can't find her (at least on the FamilySearch transcript ; there's always the possibility she was missed by a transcriber). Would they have already been in transit to Liverpool on 3 April ? And if so wouldn't she still show as a "stray" at some inn ? Or would in transit have been by ship from Carlisle to Liverpool ? David
