Dear Graham, COULTHARD's had a locomotive engineering work at Gateshead in the 19th century. I have looked through Alfred Coulthard's book on the various branches for you but cannot find a William McKinley Coulthard at present. However, Alfred had this to say about the Gateshead engineering families. "RALPH COULTHARD who became Resident Engineer to the Brandling Junction Railway in 1836 was born at Newburn (now part of Newcastle) in 1790. He was a son of ROBERT COULTHARD an "engine wright" who was born about 1755-60. JOHN COULTHARD who founded the Gateshead firm of locomotive manufacturers of that name was born at Newburn in 1809, another son of this Robert Coulthard the "engine wright". WILLIAM COULTHARD who became Resident Engineer of the North Union Railway and who built many North Country railroads was born in 1797, the grandson of William Coulthard the blacksmith at Callerton, three miles from Newburn." From this and the accompanying chart on the Robert/Ralph/John family it appears that WILLIAM was not closely related to the other two. I could not find a chart for William nor any text to say who his father had been. It is a very thick book and if you have a copy of your uncle Alfred's book, Edgar, maybe you can have a check through too in case I have missed something or have a different version. The book was privately published some years ago. I can only say that WILLIAM COULTHARD above was an Engineer in the right place at the right time to have married and had a son William McKinley Coulthard but no proof of the matter. COULTHARD was and is a pretty common border name and these have, so far as I know, no direct connection to our family. I hope you have success in finding your correct family and hope this helps in some small way if only for elimination. I hope you will let us know if you do manage to connect up to the Engineer as no doubt there is plenty of interesting material in that story. Best wishes, Jill Coulthard Graham Williams wrote ..... > ......my Great,Great,Grandfather:- > William Mckinley COULTHARD. Ive been told by my family that his Family originated in Carlisle? Dear Jill, Thanks. I looked through "A Coulthard!" for Graham some time ago. Chart 107 page 353 Coulthard of South Wales: is the one listing William McKinley Coulthard. It gives no details of W.M.C.'s father apart from "William Coulthard, engineer". (These details came from Graham in the first place.) William Coulthard M.Inst.C.E. b.30May1797 is on chart 22 page 124. Coulthard (alias Coulter) of Lesbury and Ponteland. He married Margaret Robson at Bellingham in 1819 and had 5 children:- William Robson d.Adelaide 3Jan1866, Catherine, Eleanor, John b.1832 d.Armagh 19Apr1866, and Hiram Craven b.Whitby d.New Zealand 1881. All 3 sons are listed as Engineers. (I haven't checked any of these details with other sources.) It seems unlikely that William b.1797 would have two sons living concurrently named William Robson C. and William McKinley C. I've sort of looked on the IGI for a marriage between Coulthard & McKinley without success (apart from one that was too late). Is there an easy way to do this without having to keep thinking up candidate Christian names? Chart 44 page 194 covers the Gateshead Locomotive Manufacturers. In case anyone is interested there are at least three lots of Coulthards connected with my family. My mother's branch from Hallburn (chart 51), Alfred's branch from Cumwhinton (55), and a Workington branch. GRAHAM: I'll try to scan chart 22 for you - I don't think I gave you that one. It is a bit tightly bound for scanning though.
