Hi, I just signed on to the Ellis Island site looking for some relatives. I am positive I have found an entry for an ancestor. Background - Jane (Trimble) Carlton was the wife of David Carlton ; they lived in Flimby & Little Broughton. David left in 1878 to get established in Colorado. She, and their 5 daughters, emigrated from Carlisle to Louisville, Boulder County, Colorado in 1881 ; and she was widowed in 1892. Lived the rest of her life there. On the Ellis Island site I found an entry for a "Jane Carlton", arrived in New York 31 August 1904 on board the "Majestic" from Liverpool. She is listed as "Mrs. Jane Carlton, age 55 [correct], widow, "England" "ethnicity" [correct - wasn't naturalized until 1913], "Destination" "home" to Louisville, Boulder County, Colorado [she was the only Jane Carlton, widow in Louisville at that time]. She is listed as an "Agent." Any thoughts on what she was doing? Recruiting immigrants? David Knowles
