Hi Everybody, I deleted the file the last time this subject was raised. Nothing disastrous happened, I downloaded the file from Microsoft. But as Rob has already said, I cannot remember how to do it, Sorry! Bryan
Hi Everyone, Just a note of thanks to all those kind people who replied to my query regarding the birth certificate. Regards, Bryan
About six years ago I was asked by a friend to apply for his birth certificate on his behalf when I made my next visit to St Catherines House. He had been born (in 1963) illegitimate and his mother had refused to tell him his fathers identity. He had never seen a full version of his birth certificate and thought that his father's name would be registered on it (unfortunately it wasn't). Upon presenting the application, a floor supervisor ushered me into a small room where I was interrogated for quite some time as to the reason for the application. My explanation was eventually accepted and the certificate arrived in the post a week later. On the other hand, I have made successful applications for birth certificates of my parents, aunts and uncles (all born between 1918 and 1930) without any problems and two out of the total of six are still alive. It is however, rather different if you do not know the person who's certificate you are applying for and you might find yourself in the embarrassing situation of giving them an unsuitable reason for the application!! Regards, Trevor Littleton
Off the top of my head (still full of Xmas stuff)......it is absolutely taboo in Canada!! But I will check this out to be 100% sure. And Guy....I am not one of the 'paranoid fringe' (G). I was a paralegal. Turn this around.......would you want me to be able to get your birth certificate, then using that, get your Social Insurance Number, a driver's licence, etc.......then open credit card accounts (remember, I have your mother's maiden name with this).......and bleed you dry!! Just a little 'enlightenment' on how identity theft works. And I am darn glad we have these laws. True case........as I was a Commissioner of Oaths (slightly less than a Notary Public). Remember when James Earl Ray was on the run after killing Martin Luther King? He came to Toronto......went thru old newspaper microfilm birth announcements.....picked out 3 people roughly his own age......and then armed with the mother's maiden name, etc., he applied for passports and a Notary 'rubberstamped' them. I personally knew 2 of the 3 people he stole the identity of.......how's that for a small world in a city of 2 million people??? And one was a cop, who found life a little tense at the station after that!! Hi David, I can't imagine that they would have been on board a ship travelling between Carlisle and Liverpool. The two cities are only around 130 miles apart and the natural journey would be by road. A few more details about Jane (DOB, place of birth, daughters' names and DOBs etc) might help? Hi Everybody, Am I allowed to obtain a copy of a birth certificate of a living person without their knowledge or is this totally taboo? I fear the latter but would like your comments on the matter. Bryan

Thanks for the answers. I should have added at least a little detail for you ; Carlton is a fairly common name in Carlisle. The main reason I'm looking in 1881 is to find the name of this elusvie "Aunt Bella" they are staying with. I believe that will be a big help with my Trimbles. I am missing - Name Marital Age Birthplace Jane (McLean) Carlton M 64 Harrington Mary Jane Carlton U 28 Cumberland Jane (Trimble) Carlton M 32 Carlisle Nancy "Ann" Carlton U 12 Maryport Jane Carlton U 10 Little Broughton Sarah Isabella Carlton U 8 Little Broughton Mary Carlton U 6 Dovenby Margaret Annie Carlton U 2 Dearham David
Does any one have access to Haughton parish records? I would be very grateful for any help in this matter.E.B
This was on LANCSGEN list today. Looks as though it's worth another look at 1901 census site if there was anyone you thought should be there but failed to find. Handy that you can look at just the amendments. Keep sending the corrections in folks! Hello, I just found (actually refound buried under dust) the (U.S.) naturalization papers for Jane (Trimble) Carlton. Like all records they got more detailed as they evolved. While her husband and father-in-law came ahead to get settled, she and her 5 daughters stayed with her sister named "Bella" in Carlisle. The naturalization states she left Liverpool 21 June 1881, arrived New York 12 July and arrived Colorado 1 Aug. (took longer by land than by sea!) The Genuki site says the 1881 census was 3 April but I can't find her (at least on the FamilySearch transcript ; there's always the possibility she was missed by a transcriber). Would they have already been in transit to Liverpool on 3 April ? And if so wouldn't she still show as a "stray" at some inn ? Or would in transit have been by ship from Carlisle to Liverpool ? David
David Know writes about the 1881 LDS CD: <snip> >I was trying to get verification that it was transcribed correctly. <snip> I've only used the 1881 census to check up on my own family, and so (having been doing this genealogy lark for some time), I looked at microfilms of the original sometime before the 1881 LDS CD was transcribed and published. My limited experience has been that CD transcriptions are very highly flawed. In particular, one of my (non-Cumbrian) ancestors was given the wrong age and address; and another, born in SouthWARK in London, was listed as born in Warwickshire. However, this doesn't say anything about Cumberland transcriptions - it may be that these were of better quality. Chris chris@dickinson.uk.net
David, yes that will be the LDS transcription which is also available on line at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp The CD set has much better search facilities. John >If someone says they have the 1881 census on CD, what do they have - a >transcript or photocopies of the original ? > >David > > >
Does anyone have an email address for Colchester Essex please? David
Hi all, Thanks for the quick replies. I was afraid it was the transcript. Just before Christmas (this was like a present under the tree!) I stumbled on to a Power-of-Attorney that gave me 2 children I hadn't known about. The next day, while checking the married name of the daughter I came across a person who had a cache of old photos no one could identify. I'm close to identifying them all. The daughter was Sarah Isabella Carlton born 1848 (probably Little Broughton ; or possibly Camerton) Cumberland to Thomas & Jane (McLean) Carlton. It would seem that sometime c.1880 she her husband and children moved to Wolsingham, Durham. (The Power-of-Attorney puts her in Durham in 1891) I was trying to get verification that it was transcribed correctly. It is at Park Terrace, Wolsingham, Durham ; and the head of the household is Robert Birkett. My questions are - His wife is listed as Sarah J - is it J or I ? She is listed as born at Summerton, Cumberland (could it be Camerton because I can't find a Summerton, Cumberland)? There are 2 children listed as "Stobbart" - is that an accurate rendition of the names ? They are called "daur in law" & "son in law" to Robert - is this meant to be stepchildren (I know that could be long ago but seems to me I've seen stepchild on the 1881 census before) ? And does that imply Sarah was married to a Stobbart c.1866 (aside from legitimacy issues) ? Everyone was born in Cumberland ; the 2 Stobbart children and 1 Birkett child in Bridekirk. David
David, I would think they have the LDS disk if they say they have the 1881 census on disk which is a transcription rob
If someone says they have the 1881 census on CD, what do they have - a transcript or photocopies of the original ? David
