Sorry, didnt mean census, I meant B.M.D. Sue.
Just to keep people informed andif you want to get in early for certificates. Revised Certificate Fees Revised fees for certificates will come into effect on 1 April 2003. The standard fee for a full certificate of birth, marriage, death or adoption will be £7.00. Certificate Fees Each year the fees charged for certificates by the General Register Office are reviewed during the months of October/November. Our aim in setting the statutory fee is to ensure that ONS only recovers the costs relating to the service provided. The efficiency measures implemented over the last few years have meant that we have been able to maintain the current level of fees for the last 4 years. The review undertaken this year highlighted that, despite the efficiency measures and in order to meet our costs, certificate fees would have to be increased by 50 pence. Changes to the statutory fee have to be included in an Order agreed by the minister and laid before Parliament. This was completed in December 2002. For applications taken at the FRC, the revised fees, as from 1 April 2003, are as follows: Standard Service Full certificate of birth, marriage or death £7.00 Full certificate of adoption £7.00 Short certificate of birth £7.00 Short certificate of adoption £5.50 Priority Service Full certificate of birth, marriage or death £23.00 Full certificate of adoption £23.00 Short certificate of birth £23.00 Short certificate of adoption £21.50 The administration fee charged in cases where we are unable to produce a certificate will remain the same. This means that refunds will increase to £4.00. The complete list of revised fees will be included on the ONS website at www.statistics.gov.uk and displayed at the FRC in the near future. Charges at Local Register Offices are also being increased by 50 pence. Did you know....applications for certificates have increased by 52% in the past six years. The total number of applications received at Southport increased from 545,272 in 1996/1997 to 827,076 in 2001/2002 Pam

Hi Mary...... Is this an LDS film?? Sometimes if it is re-ordered you might get a better copy. Lately I notice that if a film is bad, there is a label on the film box saying so. Just a thought........you could speak to one of the people in charge. Heather (in a bitterly cold Ontario......grin) > Hi Listers > Searching the 1841 film, but it is barely readable. Hi Listers Searching the 1841 film, but it is barely readable. Are there any other available means. of finding persons living in Carlisle (probably Caldewgate) at that time? Any suggestions welcome.. William MITCHINSON and Sarah SCOTT were married at St. Mary, Carlisle, on 16 Oct 1852. Both their addresses were given as Milburn Street. They emigrated to Melbourne on the "Miles Barton", which left Liverpool on 27 Apr 1853. With them was their 10-month-old daughter Jane Elizabeth, who clearly must have been born before their marriage. A birthday book belonging to a descendant gives Jane Elizabeth's birth as 10 Mar 1852. (Perhaps her age on the passenger list was her age when they booked the ticket?) According to her daughter's birth certificate in NZ, Jane was born in Carlisle. I'm having problems finding Jane Elizabeth's birth. She was not registered as MITCHINSON. There is only one Jane Elizabeth SCOTT born in Cumberland in the civil registration indexes for 1852, and that is in March 1852 in Cockermouth District. There is no matching baptism in the IGI. Sarah SCOTT herself was baptised in Caldbeck on 07 Nov 1830, daughter of Isaac SCOTT and Jane late SIBSON, who had been married in Caldbeck in 1829 (all from IGI). But Caldbeck is in Wigton District, not Cockermouth. I thought it might help to find Sarah SCOTT and/or her parents Isaac and Jane SCOTT on the 1851 census - if the parents lived in Cockermouth District, that would make it more likely that the birth of Jane Elizabeth in Cockermouth District is correct. I cannot find any of them in the Carlisle Part 1 and 2 transcript and index (except for William MITCHINSON, who lived in Denton Holm). Can anybody with an index for the 1851 census for the other parts of Carlisle, for Caldbeck or for anywhere in Cockermouth District have a look for the following people please? Sarah SCOTT, age 20 - she gives her profession as grocer at her marriage, but later worked as a dressmaker. She was probably born in Caldbeck (possibly Hesket Newmarket). Isaac SCOTT, grocer, and his wife Jane SCOTT - they are likely to be in their 40s. Many thanks, Petra
Is there a Sandra out there who used to have the address ...Malcandsan@btinternet.com.... a DEVINE researcher - if so would she please contact me - sure I have some information for her. Lynne in Carlisle
Hi does anyone know anything about this pay site for exact replicas of the 1837 census? Its not ready yet and doesnt say when. Apologies if this has already been discussed and overlooked by me. Regards, Sue.
List, In response to my recent posts of certificate witnesses I've gotten some great replies. One thread is going - the informant for the death of David McClean, in Harrington in 1839, was Mary [appears to be] Gribbin. One lister mentioned that David had a daughter Mary baptized 1811 in Harrington. Wonder if this is her ? Anyone familiar with a McClean / Gribbin marriage ? David
List, I must apologize for a recent post of mine titled "Name Evolution" ; it was disingenuous and misleading. And I should know better. While scanning some certificates to send to a list member I reviewed one from 1993 that I had not looked at since. For some reason I had it in my mind that the spelling of a child's middle name in 1860 had changed to "McLean" ; it had not not. He was listed as Stuart McClean Carlton. I can be very harsh on those who research and transcribe poorly ; fairness dictates no double standard. David Knowles
I have been given a copy of a marriage certificate for William Ratcliffe and Frances Walker who married 13 August 1881 at St. Bees. Both were aged 21, William a Stoker of Egremont, son of James a Tanner and Frances a spinster of Moor Close, St. Bees, daughter of William a husbandman. I understand that the couple emigrated to Argentina where William worked on the railways. There are apparently no passenger records in Argentina. Can anyone suggest any other line of approach? I have tried the Emigration website but the only query relating to emigration to Argentina around that time has been left unanswered. I have no personal interest in this other than an Isaac Mossop was named as a witness at the wedding though he does not appear to have been a relative but I will pass any suggestions on to the enquirer. He is asking if any record would be kept by the port, ship, passport office or railway company. Any ideas? Jill
Jill, The Immigration Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG) ( http://istg.rootsweb.com/ ) is an ongoing project to post passenger lists. I only saw 2 to Argentina and 2 to Brazil ; may get lucky. And they add new ones pretty frequently . There was also a list of Irish to Argentina that was compiled from somewhere else. Kevin, Yes that is absolutely them ; and I will be sending you off list a number of certificates that I have. David Knowles ps That Thomas Birkett looks intriguing . A while ago I posted a message - "Steve Bulman has posted 7 of my old photos at his site - http://www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/cumbria/ - under frames / photographs / old family photographers." I believe some, perhaps all, are Birketts from Cumberland. Have you had a chance to look ? In most cases don't know who they are ; and am probably not related. 1.1839 Lowca, Harrington Whitehaven (witness at a death, "Her mark") Mary Gribbin (unfortunately it is indistinct ; there is a "b" in November and an "l" in McClean that either one could fit - it may be Grilbin, Griblin, or Grillin). 2.1839 Lowca, Harrington Whitehaven Registrar Thomas Harrison 3.1879 Dearham "Cause of death certified by" "John Creraz M.R.C.P. & L.R.C.S.E." [The "z" is questionable (and may be an "r") and the "&" may be an "E"] 4.1879 Dearham Registrar Thomas Discon [The "c" does not match the other lower case "c"s on the page but it also has no tail so is probably not a lower case "g"] David
Just received the death certificate for David "Mc Clean" father of Jane (McLean) Carlton. David died in 1839 and the surname is "Mc Clean". I have seen Jane listed as a Mc Clean and as a McLean. Jane's youngest son (born June 1856 and died 17 March 1860) was listed on his death certificate as Stewart "McLean'" Carlton. In just 21 years the surname dropped the 2nd "C". Which is comparable to the Carltons - in roughly the same time period, my line, went from Carleton to Carlton. David
On a death certificate from 1878 - there is no listing for parents, place of birth, etc. But this is the entry under "Signature, description and residence of informant" - "David Carlton, Son in Law, in attendance, Craika Terrace, Dearham." Every document is valuable ! David
Just received 2 death certificates from the GRO. God I love this hobby. David
