    1. [CUL-CAR] Phillipstown
    2. Bill Knight
    3. I could use some help finding Phillipstown. I found the following records of two potential ancestors on a film of the church records of KirkAndrews upon Esk: 1686 "Anne daughter of Richard Rea of Phillipstown baptized March 31" 1698 "Janet Hellen[?] daughter of William and Janet Rea of Phillipstown bapt. Sept 24th" I have not been able to find "Phillipstown". I did find a "Pattenstown" but I'm pretty sure it is "Phillipstown". Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome. 1. [CUL-CAR] Re: Castle W: plus WWi records
    2. I have been researching on the GRO and kept coming across the district Castle W. What does the W stand for and where is it in Carlisle? The other question I would like to ask is, is there another site that you can access for WW1 information apart from the CWWG site. I have found an entry for one of my relatives but it doen't give an age and I would like to confirm a year of birth to tie up loose ends. Any suggestions welcome.

    1. [CUL-CAR] Term for Legal Profession
    2. Hi, I just received a wedding certificate from 1874 in Cockermouth. It is very faint in places. The groom is Robert Birkett and says his father is Irving Birkett. (Bride is Sarah Carlton Stobart, widow). The father's profession is faint but it looks to be Lawyer. Was that term in use in England in 1874 for the legal profession ? I have other known letters on the cert and feel certain that it is _awyer. Unfortunately the first letter is the faintest and there's no capital L to compare to. Regards, David

    3. Hi All...... Just wanted to let you know that I am now the List Administrator for Rod Neep's Cumberland List......and it has been a hectic few days. The undertaking is huge as he is covering all of Britain, Scotland, Wales etc. But I think it will be mesh well with Chris' Lists and we can all work together to find those 'missing links and brick walls'. Have a look at Rod's website and see the amazing number of counties and varying subjects he has set up Lists for. When I get a free minute, there is one in Scotland I intend to investigate re my BOWNESS line. Have a look at the following link, and I hope you will think about joining up on our new List. There are a lot of familiar names on there already. http://www.british-genealogy.com Cheers.........Heather List Admin - ENG-CUL heatherfig@rogers.com

    3. Faugh is about six miles east of Carlisle. It is in Hayton parish and I imagine the parish records there would be the best place to start looking for Mary Ackle. Peter Ostle visit the family websites at www.ostle.ca ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis and Betty Leebel To: ENG-CUL-CARLISLE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 20, 2003 1:22 AM Subject: [CUL-CAR] Carlisle/St. Cuthbert's Research Dear List Members, I just recenty subscribed to the ENG-CUM-CAR Digest and have a few general questions to pose to other users of the list. I am researching the Nicholson's, Lowes/Lows, and Ackles families starting around the time William Nicholson married Mary Ann Lowes and emigrated to the US (early to mid 1860's). The Nicholson's and Lowes are from St. Cuthbert's Parish and I am searching the church records for the period 1752 to 1862. I also have ordered the Carlisle/ St. Cuthbert censuses for 1851 and 1871. All the records are from the LDS microfilm files. Mary Ann Lowes parents were Thomas Lowes and Mary Ackle. Mary Ackle was from Faugh which I know is close to St. Cuthbert's. Does anyone have any idea what church Mary would have belonged to if she was from Faugh? Also, does anyone know of any other church or civil records which might help me ? And lastly, is anyone aware of any family genealogies that may relate to my families of interest? Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone may be able to provide. Best of luck in your research. 3. Sorry to butt in, but I have extracted BATY entries from Kirkandrews in the past, and I have some slight differences. This is not meant to be a criticism of Bill!!! My transcriptions were from the BTs on the LDS film while Bill's are probably from the Parish Registers as they contain more details. Of course there is no telling whether Bill's or my version is the correct one! Some of these old documents are incredibly difficult to read, particularly on microfilm. 1755 Marriage: I have the second witness as John TURNBULL. 1756 Marriage: I have Jane BATY's abode as Shadewellcrook [the Cumberland Place Name Index has a Shadwellcrook in Kirkandrews]. Also, I have the second witness as John RIDLEY. 1759 Marriage: This was definitely in 1758, not 1759, as the Rector Mr BATY was buried on 02 Dec 1758! 3. Hi Ann, I'm afraid there is no Burton Hall in the Cumberland Place Name Index. The only place starting with Burton is Burton High in Whitehaven, grid reference NX 98 18. The only Bur..... Hall is Burthwaite Hall in St. Cuthberts Carlisle at grid reference NY 41 50. Nothing helpful under Ber..... or Bir..... either, and no Barton Hall. There is a Brayton Hall in Aspatria parish at grid reference NY 16 42, which sounds vaguely similar. Sorry, nothing definite. 1. Re: [CUL-CAR] Where is Langlands Head?
    2. Petra Mitchinson
    3. Hi Bryan, The Cumberland Place Name Index has no Langlands Head, only a Langland in Dacre parish at grid reference NY 46 30. As other listers already mentioned, there is a Longlands Head in Kirkbride parish at grid reference NY 21 55. There are also several places called Longlands: in Ennerdale parish at NY 05 14 in Gosforth parish at NY 05 04 in Lanercost parish at NY 55 67 in Uldale parish at NY 26 35 There is also a Longlands Moor in Aikton parish at NY 25 54, and a Longhead in Wigton parish at NY 24 48. Longlands Head in Kirkbride still seems the most likely place.
