    3. Hi Barbara, Greetings to a possible distant cousin. I know very little about Sarah NICHOL (or NICKOL or NICKOLS) according to which child on the IGI you look up. I haven't gone back to parish records to confirm these details yet for this generation (I hope to in the future), but the existence of Robert Nichol BENSON later would seem to confirm the name. They were married at Saint Mary (IGI) and the children were also christened at Saint Mary. I presume that is just south of the river from Stanwix judging from the birth addresses of the next generation so it seems quite likely we have the same Sarah. However marriages were more commonly held in the bride's church, I believe. I will let you know if, and when, I find more info. Who were Sarah's parents? I am tracing the Nichol family from Carlisle. My family is a John Nichol born 1810 in Carlisle.. His father was a Robert Nichol and I believe his grandfather was a Robert Nichol. There was a Sarah Nichol born 1773 and christened in Stanwix parish. My John Nichol came to Canada in 1832 and married here in Canada. Don' t know if we can connect these families or not. 3. Hello Listers, I am new to this list and wonder if anyone can help me? My 3xgreat grandfather William SETREE was living in Stanwix when he made his Will in 1778. Does anyone recognise the name SETREE? - this man's son owned property in Appley-in-westmorland and I am presuming the family came from around the area. The family was quite wealthy owning businesses, properties in London and being able to leave money to charity. Which local body would I approach to find out where he is buried? Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Kind regards Ann Nelson, New Zealand

    1. [CUL-CAR] What's in a name - was Francis / Frances
    2. John and Jill Coulthard
    3. Hi Everyone, I have always thought there was a complete distinction in UK between the male and female versions. In 1748 there was a marriage in our family between Francis Outram and Frances Chambers. Practically every generation from then on named a boy Francis and a girl Frances, distinguished as Frank and Fanny. Eventually they gave up the formal name and just baptised the children as the latter. The last I know of was my father-in-law named Frank and he had an aunt and uncle Frank and Fanny. I have just tested this out on IGI and as David says they make a distinction between the two sexes. Interestingly they recognise Fanny as an alternative for Frances but treat Frank as a separate name to Francis. F-i-L also had two aunts from another side baptised Kate and Lizzie not Catherine and Elizabeth. Their sister Martha was known throughout her life as Patty which I understand was a diminutive for that name though one I had never come across until recently. Jill

    1. [CUL-CAR] Francis / Frances
    2. Hello, First, did you know that a study was done for the Federal Communications Commission titled "Long-term Trends in Personal Given Name Frequencies in the UK" ? ( http://users.erols.com/dgalbi/telpol/names.pdf ) (no wonder taxes are so high ! ) Or that the 10th most popular male name in London in 1120 was Drogo ? Or that the 10th most popular female name in "North England" in 1350 was Juliana (pretty name but it's never shown up since) ? Or that 6 of the 10 most popular male names in London in 1994 never showed up as popular in the past ; while 8 of the most popular female names of "North England" in 1994 never showed before (and 1 - Emma - shows only in 1350 and 1994) ? Just like to point out something I learned today (you can teach an old dog a new trick). The reason for this search was because I discovered that (at least it appears) the online IGI does not consider Francis and Frances as interchangeable. Francis is the male version and Frances is the female version. I was checking a small time period in England only so it may not apply over time. But something to keep in mind. David

    2. Hello, Is / was there a difference between a "mariner" and a "sailor" in the period around 1760 in Cumberland ? If I found a John Smith described as a "mariner" in a BT entry and 5 years later another John Smith called a "sailor" are they different people or is there a chance they are the same person ? I know there are "seamen" and "able bodied seamen" and they are different. The sequence was "mariner" in 1765 and "sailor" in 1782. David
