    2. Sue Harding
    3. I agree it would be good to know where others on the list are searching FROM, it might be that we can useful to those kind souls who are able to access Carlisle information direct. So saying, I live in Rugby, Warwickshire, UK and as I work at the local library I have access to family history archives and census material for Rugby and it's surrounding environs. I'd be happy to do look-ups etc., for anyone with interests in this area - (a lot of people were resettled here from Cumberland after WW2, I remember my parents taking me to the Cumberland Society Christmas parties as a child!) Sue Harding (searching BEATTIE, ROUTLEDGE, MEYERS, in Carlisle; CARSON, STEVENSON in Stirlingshire, Scotland; HARDING, COOKE, BROWN in Sussex and London) --------------------------------- It's Samaritans' Week. 3. Not a bad idea.........but where are you. I am near Toronto, Canada for instance and could direct people to the National Archives and census information for any descendants that emigrated here. For me.......I am researching around the Whitehaven area. I have a brick wall who lived there, but no idea where he came from. However one kind soul found a very good possible in Asby, which I will follow up on via parish records. All of my research is pre-1800 btw. I have a lot of names I picked up the other day from Whitehaven parish records, simply because I recognized them from my List and Chris' Lists. I will put them out here shortly. Cheers.......Heather Brampton, Ontario. > I was thinking what a good idea it would be if there could be a exchange of > research in respective towns in which we live in. 1. [CUL-CAR] John Gill of Ashtree
    2. Bill Knight
    3. I 'm interested in a John GILL of Ashtree in Hayton-upon-Brampton. I have traced my line back to John KNIGHT of Ashtree - born about 1665 in Hayton. There are entries for John KNIGHT of Ashtree through 1731 - then nothing. So I was surprised when, looking through the transcripts, an entry for 'John GILL of Ashtree' caught my eye. Below are listed several entries for John GILL - taken from the Bishop Transcripts of Hayton. Christenings Han 28 1738 Jemina, daughter of John Gill of Hayton Nov 8 1741 John, son of John Gill of Townhead Sep 2 1744 Lancelot, son of John Gill of Townhead Nov 15 1747 Jane, daughter of John Gill of Hayton Nov 19 1753 Edward, son of John Gill of Hayton Townhead Nov 19 1753 Mary, daughter of John Gill of Hayton Townhead Sep 5 1756 Barbary, daughter of John Gill Hayton Jul 29 1759 Thos, son of John Gill of Ashtree in Hayton Sep 8 1760 Edwd, son of John Gill of Ashtree in Hayton Burials: Aug 5 1759 Thos., son of John Gill of Ashtree in Hayton Jul 29 1762 Edwd., son of John Gill of Ashtree in Hayton Ashtree farm still exist, or did until last year, when it was sold to developers - building Townhouses, I believe. I would appreciate any help, ideas, comments, etc. concerning John GILL, Ashtree Farm and, of course, John KNIGHT. Thanks. Bill Knight Chagrin Falls, Ohio Researching all the KNIGHT's of Cumberland

    1. Re: [CUL-CAR] Help needed
    2. Here is question that you may have n answer to... How does this name go from O'Neile, to O'Neill, to O'Neil, to Neill? Was this because of the way the enumerator spelled it? Or a transcriber's error? Also, did people not care what thier brothers and sisters named thier children..and then give thier own children the same name? I have a confusing situation with the 1881 census and Francis O'Neil and his family. In Carlisle there is Francis (37) and his wife Margaret (34) with children, William (11), John (6), James (4), Margaret (1) and Mary Jane (8). In Gateshead there is a family named CASSIDY. Head, David (60) and wife Mary (56) and children, Margaret Ann (21), Mary (18) and Daniel (15) with them are 2 nephews and a niece...John O'Neil (15), James O'Neil (11) and Ellen O'Neil (8) (Could these be Francis' brother John's children?) Now that all makes sense..I figure they may be cousins (the children). Now here is where I get confused...as I cannot find Francis in the 1901 census in Carlisle. I do find a Francis Neill (54), widower, in Gateshead with sons John (25) a general laborer, James (2?) a blacksmith striker; and daughters Margaret (21) and Ellen (17). Well, now that I have written this out to you I think I have figured out....these are 2 families with children of the same names.....what is the probability that they are related??? Any ideas? They are most welcome :) Jan

    2. pmc01
    3. I contracted with a Malcolm Hills (researcher in Carlisle) to try and find what happened with the children of Thomas Cholmley (mayor of Carlisle) and to confirm that this Thomas was buried in St Mary's, Carlisle. He acknowledge receipt of the money on Nov 18 last year and promised to "keep me informed of progress" ... I have received a couple of short messages in 2002 but that was the last contact with him. I've sent a number of emails and his web-site appears to be still working but I'm worried that something has happened to him and I haven't noticed/been told. Maybe he has been ill or something. Can SKS let me know he is still alive/working??? This research is very important to me, so I'm waiting patiently... Peter Chomley Australia

Thank you Barry, This may be him as the name 'Ellen' reappears as one of his children...but not until 1901 in and she she 17 yrs. and in Durham. I am a bit confused.... This may a silly question...would the name 'Jolly Hatters' have anything to do with an occupation? On Francis' marriage licence it says his father was a Silk Hatter (deceased). Jan

    3. I am at present working with some other members of the CFHS to index all the wills at Carlisle up to 1800 and to put the results on CD. It is something of a long term project, I'm affraid. In the meantime, I think there are just the books although some years have already been transferred to film and are in the drawers with the Parish Register films. 2. Hello Listers, I have just received the marriage certificate of my grt grt grandparents. Francis O'Neile and Margaret (Marguret) Johnston. They were married 28 Jun 1868 in Carlisle. He was living at Irvings Place (Rotchergate?) Carlisle and she was on Lime Street. Francis' father was William O'Neile (deceased) and had worked as a 'silk hatter' (?) Margaret's father was James Johnston and a Blacksmith. Francis was 26 at the time of marriage, so I est. a birth of about 1842 (b. Carlisle) and Margaret was 20, so a birth of abt. 1848. (b. Isn't O'Neile a strange spelling? Oh yea...one of the witnesses was Ellen O'Neill....maybe no relation ???? Thanks in advance Jan
