    1. [CUL-CAR] Anthony KNIGHT Murderer
    2. Bill Knight
    3. A recently found cousin, has told me that about 1745, an Anthony Knight was convicted of murdering Joseph Hodges. She believes the murder took place during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. After which a considerable number of trials for "high treason", etc. were held in Carlisle - resulting in 91 hanging and quartering sentencing at Carlisle Assizes, of which 33 were carried out during October and November of 1745 [Carlisle 20, Brampton 6 and Penrith 7] . Does anyone know where I could find more information about these trials? My youngest son is so pleased I've finally found "someone interesting". In any case you ideas, comments, suggestions are most welcome. Bill Knight Chagrin Falls, Ohio Researching all the KNIGHT's of Cumberland.

    3. Hi I have been watching the program on the City of Carlisle. It has been very interesting over the last few weeks and I am really enjoying it till tonight when we were told that this City is on the wrong side of the Border and we should be classed as in the Borders meaning,I think, on the Scottish side of the line. Well that puts a whole new outlook on my Family History. What do other people think. Helen ps I have no connection with the ITV program.

    2. These are harsh comments and I regret having to say them. But they need be said. I have held my comments. I have not taken a side. Until now. People have complained about having to pay for services. That is ridiculous. These things cost the services money and they need to be reimbursed. Are they under financial pressure ? I have no doubt. I signed on for the U.S. Census records on Ancestry.com. I had a 30 day "trial period" which I could have used and skipped out on. But I was very satisfied, understand their need to turn a profit & signed on for a year. Records that were available when I signed on, and were therefore part of the "contract", have just been withdrawn (eg Colorado state 1885 census). I now need to upgrade to access them. I only hope you scum have not put the AGLL out of business. David Knowles PS I have sent them demanding a full refund. I will keep you informed.

    1. [CUL-CAR] re- Cumberland resettlement after WW2
    2. Sue Harding
    3. The main reason for a lot of Carlisle people moving south was economic - there was very little work after the war. In Rugby, Warks. (where my family moved to) there were a number of large factories being built and being near to Coventry there was a lot of rebuilding going on after the war, when a large portion of the city was blitzed! In my family's case, my parent's cousins arrived to help in the engineering works and the word soon spread "back home" that there was good, reasonably cheap housing and plenty of employment, so other parts of the family "de-camped" to the Midlands. They must have felt like outsiders to the indiginous population of the Midlands, because of thier Border accents. So many families had to tear up their "roots" that they formed the Cumberland Society and met together regularly, as a means of keeping in touch with news from back home, and also keeping alive family and cultural traditions. It wasn't easy to leave everything behind, but there were few prospects for staying in Carlisle. Even forty or fifty years later, Carlisle is still considered "home" by my elderly aunt, and although I was the first member of the family born in Warwickshire, I can get quite nostalgic looking at old family photos. When I visit Carlisle I make a point of visiting the places where members of the family owned businesses and lived and imagining what their lives were like. 1. [CUL-CAR] Resettlement land settlement
    2. During the wars, there was a development of Land settlement houses in Cumbria, where people from the North East who were in deprivation were settled into North and West Cumberland - They were given properties with an acre of land, supposedly so they could be self sufficient and grow there own vegetables and fruits etc. Many of them were from the mining areas of the North East this was a resettlement for the persons concernerd but it was called land resettlement. The houses were distinctive and were meant to last 30 years ( Ithink it was 30 years) as they were of the first pre fabrication kind, and weren't unlike some of the houses that you see in new England USA today. Many of the houses remain in and around the Carlisle area, and are now privately owned and have well outlasted there 30 year life span. The houses that are no longer there I remenber in the late 50's still went as far down as Cockermouth on the Moota road. These were built between the wars, before there was an increase in the ehavy industries in West Cumbria i.e. steel works etc. As Neville said the word resettlement is used in allsorts of contexts. 3. If the answer isn't too long and complicated, would someone explain why Cumbrians were resettled after WW2?
