Hello Everybody, Can someone tell me where Southey Street was/is in Workington please? Bryan
Wow, you really do know how to throw a wrench into the works, don't you! Now I have all the Jacobs and Jacobi to integrate into the James, of which there are plenty in the first place...... What are some of the other land mines I should be wary of? Rowland = Rowlandi. Is there a Latin form of George? Johanes, Johan = John? What about Joseph? Robert = Robertus Is there a Thomas trap? How about William? Quietly sitting in my corner playing with all the pretty sparklies. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Malcolm Borrowdale" <Mjborrowdale@btinternet.com> To: <ENG-CUL-CARLISLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 12:44 PM Subject: Re: [CUL-CAR] Latin Translation > Jacobus was used as the latinised form of James. Has anyone ever heard of the artist named Edward Alcock? A portrait of Dr. William Brownrigg [1712-1800], (in knee-breeches) at Isel Hall, is attributed to him. Ann Brownrigg

Here's something I found by Googling for Jacobus: G o o g l e's cache of http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/3011/NGS.htm National Genealogical Society Quarterly "Signatures, Penmanship, and Name Variations Identifying Reverend Mr. Jacob Ware" by Kay Rockett Volume 86, No. 3, September 1998 <snip> "This pair of documents raises yet another research consideration: name variations. The 1675 matriculation register identifies the newly enrolled student as Jacobus Ware, adding (in Latin) 'of All Souls College...' The 1679 graduate signs as 'Jacob Ware (of All Souls College).' The previously cited biographical note in Foster's alumni directory cites the 1675-79 student as James Ware. All three names were interchangeable in that era. Latin was the language of the scholar at Oxford in the 1600's. Students signed their names using the Latin form--in Jacob's case, Jacobus and Jacob. However, Jacobus was also used then as the Latin form of James. Foster, when he compiled his directory two centuries later, translated the student names back into English. During that process, he chose the wrong translation for Jacobus--rather than the less-common Jacob, he used the popular James for both the student and his father." I guess that answers that--look for both! Debra Radack

My Cumberland interests are ALLANBY (and variants) and some spouses of Allanbys - BOWNESS, FALLON, HODGSON, PEILE, SMEATON, WALKER, WILLIAMSON. Also I have a second given name of SMEATON. I've mentioned this site before now: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ but 77000 Lancashire marriages seem to have been added since I last looked - so some of you may want to have a look again. Staffordshire to come. Hmm, Cumberland ???!!! Some of you may have seen an 1837 site being advertised recently. Be wary as the PRO seems to have no knowledge of it. As my Latin is rather lousy, I won't attempt that, grin. But my guess would be that both Jacobus and Jacobi are Jacob. Anyway.......have you been in touch with Fred Mantey of these groups? He is doing a one name study (or one heck of a lot) of Barwis/e ancestors. I found one in Prince Edward Island, Canada for him and one in Jamaica, West Indies. Plus I trip over that name often in the Cumberland registers as my search is for BOWNESS. If you need Fred's address, drop me a line. The inclusion of Robert Tinniswood of Hugglehill in this list is interesting. When my g-grandparents were married in 1865 at Brigham Church in Cockermouth, one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Tinniswood. We know nothing about her, but suspect she is how related. This is the first time I've seen the Tinniswood name on this list. Jon Raymond St. Paul Park, MN http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymond
There has always been a gap in the marriage transcripts for Wigton St Mary's between the years 1781 and 1797. I have rectified this and transcribed the "missing" years (298 entries) and they can now be accessed, with an index, on my site www.cumberlandroots.co.uk and follow the Wigton Link. Below is a list of the surnames involved but note that half of these are the names of witnesses to the marriage. The Vicar of the period Wilfrid CLARK very kindly obliged by adding the ages of the bride and groom in about 90% of the entries. I have digital images of the register and will send copies of entries to anyone interested as long as they are for their own personal use. While doing some research recently I came upon a document which seems to be a record of an arbitration on a land dispute in 1748. The parties involved are SAMUEL WILSON of GREAT ORTON, JAMES WARD and JOSEPH WARD both of ORTON RIGG. The arbitration panel were JOSHUA WILSON of WIGTON, JAMES SROT(Scot?) of THURSBY, JOHN NORMAN of BOW and good old Jonathan Ostell. If anyone is researching any of these families, I would be happy to send them a copy or point them to the location of the original in the CRO at Carlisle. Dorithie Denn writes: >Can anyone tell me where I might find a list of Solicitors that had offices in Carlisle around the 1940s - 60s Kelly's Directory? Should be available through Carlisle RO? A modern list of solicitors is available online at: http://www.solicitors-online.com/ Entering Carlisle into the search tool gives 108 results - so maybe not very useful, but a much smaller number of partnerships. I'd guess that a lot of those go back a couple of generations. Chris chris@dickinson.uk.net
