more from the Celtic Folk Customs book.... CELTIC. St. Columba (Columcille or Colum), an Irish missionary, established the first monastery on the Scottish island of Iona in the 6th century. Exiled from Ireland, he and 12 companions landed on Iona in AD 565, and began the conversion of the Picts. He died on 6th June AD 597.
