Hi Janice I think that John Pettit and John Poulter are almost definitely one and the same. I've got two instances of interchangeable surnames in my Cambridgeshire family too. In one case, I have Joseph PARKER also known as Joseph THOROGOOD - his mother was married to a PARKER but living with a THOROGOOD when he was born. The other is a William HOBBS aka William HOWE - his parents William HOBBS and Alice HOWE married the year after he was born. The families of both these men interchanged their surnames over the years appearing as first one and then the other in various censuses. They both lived in Balsham. I suspect their backgrounds were so well known in a small place that various registrars and enumerators differed over which surnames to use for them. Have you found a baptism for John PETTITT als. Hi again Janice Having had a look around, I suspect this is your John in 1841: Upend Hamlet, Kirtling (HO 107/65/4/6B) John Pettitt, 20, Ag Lab, Y Elizebeth Pettitt, 40/45, N Elizebeth Pettitt, 13, Y Elizer Pettitt, 10, Y (sharing house with Elizebeth Fisher, 80/82, N The Cambridgeshire Baptism Index on www.cfhs.org.uk gives probable baptisms for the two girls: 1828 Elizabeth Pettitt, d. of John & Elizabeth, Kirtling 1832 Eliza Pettitt, d. of John & Elizabeth, Kirtling My hypothesis would be that there is a marriage of a John Pettitt and Elizabeth Poulter in Cambridgeshire or nearby Suffolk sometime between 1820 and 1828 and that Elizabeth Poulter had an illegitimate son, John, before her marriage. But obviously this is only guesswork! Perhaps someone on the list could check the Cambridgeshire Marriage Index for an appropriate match in that timeframe. OK - my hypothesis would appear to be wrong! *Hangs head in shame* But I think it applies one generation further back... The British Vital Records Index (and the IGI) has a marriage on 25 March 1819 somewhere in Suffolk (unhelpfully they've grouped together all Suffolk Bishops Transcripts without specifying the parish) between John PETTITT and Elizabeth FISHER. Given the Fisher connection in the 1841 census entry I would have thought this was worth investigating further. Checking for baptisms, this one fits the bill: Kirtling: John PETTITT, bap.20 April 1821, son of John PETTITT and Elizabeth Other children of John and Elizabeth Pettitt baptised in Kirtling are: Susannah, bap.12 Dec 1824 Elizabeth, bap.15 Jun 1828 Eliza, bap.1 Jan 1832 Samuel, bap. 24 Oct 1833 Looking back another generation, here's a possible baptism for John senior: John Pettitt, son of Susan Pettitt, bap. 19 Dec 1797 And then there is a marriage between Samuel POULTER and Susannah PETTIT on 3 Jan 1802 in Kirtling! This couple has one child baptised in Kirtling - James bap. 3 Oct 1802. So it looks like your John may well have taken on his step (or possibly natural) grandfather's surname at stages during his life. Hope this helps (it's certainly helped distract me from the housework!) Hi Ruth No I have not yet found a bapt for John Pettitt (Pettett/Pettetit) as I always thought he was just my GT GT Nan's 1st husband no point in chasing him as Hannah was a Poulter it is only with a great deal of help of Paula of this list that has show me the census which shows about Hannah as I could never find her birth no wonder it was under Pettit which the birth cert shows I do know I have the right one as the mother's maiden name is Stigwood. I could understand changing from one to another but registering the children differently as well I think I have to see if I can find more on the baptism of the children do you know if they are on line I am looking from 1844 onwards as well as earlier for John Pettitt. They say we lead difficult lives today is nothing compared to them lol thanks for your input it is very much appreciated Regards Janice ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ruth" <historyscape@gmail.com> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2004 12:59 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-CAMB] What a Mystery > Hi Janice > > I think that John Pettit and John Poulter are almost definitely one > and the same.
