Hi Everyone This is my first posting on this list. I have come here to get help on perhaps the most common name in England - John SMITH. According to my research so far in Sheffield I have a marriage certificate in 1852 for John SMITH (widow) age 32 (ie b~1820)Bricklayer with father John SMITH, Bricklayer. In 1861 Sheffield census he is recorded as born in Cambridge. I have found these possibilities on the searchable CAM Baptism Index: Year Surname Forenames Abode Parents Parish Indictator 1818 SMITH John -s. of John & Elizth.Camb.St.Clement * 1819 SMITH John -s. of John & Hannah Abington Pts. * 1819 SMITH John -s. of John & Sarah Chesterton * 1820 SMITH John Shelly Row s. of John & Mary Camb. St.Giles * 1820 SMITH John Wimbling. s. of John & Lidda Doddington * 1820 SMITH John -Gorefield Rd s. of John & Mary Leverington * 1820 SMITH John s. of John & Mary March * 1821 SMITH John the Hamlet s. of John & Elizabeth Bartlow * 1821 SMITH John -s.of John & Amelia Ickleton * The * refers to additional information- eg. possibly parents occupation. Can anyone suggest how I can go about screening these records to find my John SMITH and his father? Ironically, if I find these Bricklayers I'll break down my Brick Wall! Hi Dennis, Surely your best chance of finding John lies in the 1851 census. If you have his marriage certificate and he married in 1852 then you have got a good clue as to where to start looking for him in 1851.
