As an old girl of this school, I can tell you that the County School for girls in Cambridge, became the Cambridgeshire High School for Girls following the Butler Education Act (1944?)- but it was always known as "The County", and we were known as "County Girls". In your grandmother's day, it would have been in (I think) Collier Road (off Mill Road), and it moved to a new purpose built building in Long Road in the 1930s. The building is now Long Road Sixth Form College. One piece of trivia you might enjoy: When it was at Collier Road, the playground was overlooked by art students at the next door art college. One of the students was Ronald Searle - and it is said that St Trinians was inspired by the County Girls - perhaps your grandmother was one of those that he watched! ----- Original Message ----- From: <kingfive@fish.co.uk> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 23, 2004 9:25 AM Subject: [ENG-CAMB] County School Cambridge > Does anyone know if the County School Cambridge still exists, possibly under a > different name? > My grandmother attended the school, leaving in 1926 at age 16 to start work at > the newly opened branch of Sainsburys in Cambridge.
