    1. Who was my g.g.g.grandmother ??? HAYLOCK ANDERSON West Wratting
    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. Dear all The main question is how can I work out who my g.g.g.grandmother was? any idea's? From the recent free week on the Times I found many interesting things but the most significant was the death in 1854 of my g.g.grandfather George ANDERSON b1799 Lesmahagow. It gave an address of 27 Blandford Square, Marylebone. With the very kind help of Alan Long who found them at the same address in the 1851 census. Having looked for them for many years I am most pleased. (slight understatement :-) From that census I have the following G.ANDERSON head Widr 51 West I Merchant Scotland E " " daur U 11 Scholar at home London E.G. " " son U 10 " " London M " " daur U 8 " " London A " " " U 6 " " London J " " " U 4 " " London Mrs HAYLOCK M-in-L W 73 Annuitant Cambridgeshire (there is a possible letter T or J or F before HAYLOCK) Georges wife was Mary HAYLOCK of West Wratting, Cambs, age unknown, it would seem she passed away between 1847 and 1851? George was a West India Merchant and Planter in Demerara, his half brothers Thomas, Robert & Alexander SMITH were also West India Merchants. Robert at least was also in Demerara. George & Marys children were :- Ellen Georgiana (my g.grandmother) Ernest George Maria Cecilia Alice Mary Janet Ann I have Georges will (proved 1854) Also mentioned in the will (as executor) is John HAYLOCK of Balsham Esquire. Any suggestions most welcome Best wishes, Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Hi Nivard Is it Mary ANDERSON nee HAYLOCK's parents you are trying to establish? If so, have you looked at the Cambridgeshire FHS website - they have searchable indexes for the 1841 and 51 censuses, and also baptism and burial indexes 1801-37. If you check HAYLOCKs in West Wratting you'll see there was a Dorothy HAYLOCK in 1841 aged 60 (bearing in mind that ages were usually rounded down in 1841). If you then check the baptism indexes you'll find one for a Mary HAYLOCK aged 2 in 1809, daughter of Edward and Dorothy HAYLOCK, in West Wratting. (There was also an 75 yr old Edward alive in W.Wratting in 1841.) You would need to do some more research of course, but that might give you a start in the (hopefully) right direction. By the way, if Mrs HAYLOCK's initial was T, J or F, the only one which would fit in 1841 was a Tabitha HAYLOCK, aged 50. The Parish Registers are available to buy on microfiche from the FHS, if you have access to a microfiche reader. Hope this is of some help. Best wishes Viv

    3. Hi Viv Thanks for your interest. > Is it Mary ANDERSON nee HAYLOCK's parents you are trying to establish? Yes, its Mary's parents and her birth date I am particularly interested in. >If so, have you looked at the Cambridgeshire FHS website - they have searchable > indexes for the 1841 and 51 censuses, and also baptism and burial indexes > 1801-37. I confess that I have looked at the indexes but could find nothing concrete, it seems one of those lines that seem impossible to prove as they move about, do not register their children and generally cause me lots of fuss !! If you check HAYLOCKs in West Wratting you'll see there was a > Dorothy HAYLOCK in 1841 aged 60 (bearing in mind that ages were usually > rounded down in 1841). If you then check the baptism indexes you'll find > one for a Mary HAYLOCK aged 2 in 1809, daughter of Edward and Dorothy > HAYLOCK, in West Wratting. (There was also an 75 yr old Edward alive in > W.Wratting in 1841.) The Dorothy is actually Dorothea and I have tracked this family for some years and been in contact with a descendent of theirs, Jean Wright, there is a possible Mary but she is mentioned in her fathers will in 1846 as a Mary HAYLOCK. > You would need to do some more research of course, but that might give you a > start in the (hopefully) right direction. By the way, if Mrs HAYLOCK's > initial was T, J or F, the only one which would fit in 1841 was a Tabitha > HAYLOCK, aged 50. The initial letter is difficult to make out given the longhand used in this section of the 1851 census, it may just be a very colourful H in HAYLOCK?? > The Parish Registers are available to buy on microfiche from the FHS, if you > have access to a microfiche reader.
