    3. The IGI has the following christenings for Whitwick: 18/1/1839 Emma Hull, to Thomas Bowley Hull and Ann 30/3/1836 Bowley Hull, to Thomas Bowley Hull and Ann So Bowley is a Hull family name - sounds as if you found the correct Edward to me! There's also a Sarah and Ann (both chr 1844) born to Samuel Hull and Mahala. The younger Mahala is here in 1891: Hudson, Annie E 1 Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire Daughter Burton Extra Staffordshire Hudson, Mahala 29 Whitwick, Leicestershire Head Burton Extra Staffordshire Hudson, William ?? 3. Thanks Estelle That has confirmed one thing, and blown another theory apart, as is usual. I was told that be Bowley name came from my Grandfathers Mother's side, but when I found her name was Hull, I spread the net wider, and looked up Smith and Bowley, and found an Elizabeth Bowley marrying a John Smith from Loughborough, who had an Edward Smith, Christened in 1850, no birth date listed, and thought I had found the Bowley link, but now there is another route to Bowley. I am learning fast with this research (which I definitely am a novice at) it is two steps forward, and at least one back. Unfortunately, due to the constant age changing of Edward in census from 1901/18921/1881/1871 and the SMITH surname, together with which Town Whaplode Drove would register in, I cannot confirm from FreeBMD which of the records are him to get his birth certificate which would lead me to his parents name for certain. I will search the Sarah Hull route further, believing her to be from the Ashby de la Zouch area. For Edward I definitely need a link to his parents. I know he was born in Whaplode Drove, between 1846-50 and that by 1871 he was working in Kirk Ella near Hull, does anyone have any census records for Whaplode Drove for 1871 to see what other SMITH's were in Whaplode Drove, or can Edward be found on an earlier census with his parents? If anyone has the time and resources to help me move on this very common name I would be very grateful.
