    3. Dear Listers I've just realised I'm sat on a goldmine of information for my CHALLIS family from Sawston. Thicko that I am, I didn't realise that the Indenture my father has had for 20 years has the main characters of my 5xGr Grandparents as the main players - until tonight !! I've attempted to type up the document, putting question marks where I can't read the word, but it still doesn't make sense. Who can I talk to to put it into modern english for me ? The document is dated 1813 if that's any help. Sample paragraph : And Whereas the said Thomas Challis and Ann his wife being so ? and instilled as aforesaid and being mutually decisions of making some provision for their children to take effect after the respective deceases of them the said Thomas Challis and Ann his wife have therefore proposed and agreed to settle the said ? and promises to the ? and support the trusts hereinafter limited or declared of and ? ? the same and ? that view and for that purpose it is intended that a fine should be levied of the said premises as hereinafter mentioned now this indenture witnesseth that in pursuance of the said agreement and for ? the same and for and in the ? ? ? ? of the mutual love and affection the said Thomas Challis and Ann his wife have for their said children hereinafter respectively named and for and in ? of the sum of ten shillings of lawful money of Great Britain to the said Thomas Challis and Ann his wife at or before the execution of those ? 3. That sounds a bit like a will - and the terms "for love and affection" are still used here in Oz for transferring property between husband and wife and avoiding stamp duty. Usually in the case of a divorce property settlement, according to the banks, but also in other cases such as my husband and myself when he first started working for himself. The bank got rather annoyed as the wording made them assume we had divorced - which we hadn't - and not told them. I also suspect the fine on the property might mean rental.
