    3. Bob et al You have to be careful with the censuses - the info was collected (especially in cities) by an enumerator who spoke to whoever was at home or left a schedule if the home was empty. Anyone at home could give the necessary info and in some cases the enumerators asked neighbours if they hadn't got the schedule back. The schedule itself was a problem, of course, since a great many people were illiterate so again neighbours were often asked to help out. Then after they'd got the schedule back the enumerator copied the details onto the census return. You can see how much scope there was for mishearing, mistranscribing or mistaking the info needed in the return. Paula
