GILES On Sunday evening, March 16th, the congregation worshipping in the Parish Church were alarmed by a cry of "Fire". The house lateley occupied by Mr Wm ANDRES and his son, from some hitherto unexplained cause caught fire, and being an old thatched building, was speedily burned to the ground. The house is situate to the east of the church and about 20 yards distant from it. The falmes burst out about 7pm. The startling cry of " Fire" naturally caused a great deal of excitement amongst the large congregation assembled in the Church, and serious consequences might have ensued had it not been for the good common sense shown by alarge number who kept their seats. The men whose services might prove useful and many others at once left the building, and the service was brought to an abrupt termination. Considerable apprehension at one time prevailed lest the flames should be carried across the road, as on a previous occasion 8 years ago, to the buildings and stacks belonging to Mr WILSON, and all means were used to obviate this danger, which fortunately was averted, and the conflagration was confined to the spot where it first broke out.
