    3. I am hoping someone may be able to help me fill in my spaces regarding my ancestors. In March 1855 Martha Vango married William Partridge in London, England. They were both still in London on 4th June 1862 but between then and 1870 I lose track of Martha and William. Next time I can locate her is approximately 1870. She has a daughter (Ellen) in New Zealand with an Edward Elborn. In 1873 she gives birth to my great great grandma Sarah Levinia Elborn in Hokitika, New Zealand (I have her birth certificate so I know this information to be true). Father given as Edward Elborn - Occupation Miner. She also goes on to have a son, William with Edward Elborn. Sometime between 1875-1880 Martha and 3 children return to London with out Edward and she remarries in 1881. I can trace Martha's family but have been searching for some time to try to trace Edward or information of their life together in England. Family stories indicate that Edward originated from Cambridgeshire, England. I do not know his birth date or any information about him except what has been handed down in family stories. I cannot find a record of them marrying in England so wondered if they got on a ship and married on board? I have searched as many records as I can find of passenger lists on the internet but have not found them. Otherwise they may have married in New Zealand although searches so far have not turned up anything? Does any one know of an ancestor called Edward Elborn who went to New Zealand in about 1860-70? I would be grateful if any body has any information on Edward Elborn or his life with Martha. Thanks Helen

    3. Hi, Helen ! This sounds really intriguing ! I have 3 different PARTRIDGE trees on the go (my own + 2 others that are rumoured to be "Cousins" (but I have not proved any link yet). All 3 trees have a number of Williams on them, but I am sorry to say that none of them fit the dates or ever married a Martha. Not much help, BUT 4 points strike me:- a) Cambridgeshire is definitely not "mining territory", so I guess Edward must have learnt the skills elsewhere in Britain (?) or possibly in New Zealand so he could have been out there for a while before Martha arrived. If I remember correctly (from 2 holidays in NZ) Hokitika is in a coal- mining area, so you may find links in NZ mining / training / apprenticeship records ? - or of course similar records back here ? b) Presumably you have found William PARTRIDGE and Martha in the 1861 G.B. Census ? - have you found Martha and the 3 children back here in G.B. in the 1881 Census ? Did she remarry before or after that 1881 Census ? c) I do not know the Census years in NZ - but presumably you have looked ? d) It seems a little strange that she names her son (by Edward ELBORN) as a William which was her first husband's name - unless he had died before she emigrated and she still had some fond memories ? IF they had parted on bad terms surely she would not have chosen this name ? All a bit "thin" I know but I hope this helps a little ! Good Hunting ! 3. Have you gone through the GRO indexes in England looking for the deaths of the first two husbands? The GRO indexes are free access on Ancestry.com - it does take a while to search them but just might fill in a bit on the husbands. Have you found a likely Edward Elborn in 1841-1861 censuses in England (and who do NOT appear in 1871, etc.)? It is very hard to find any record of people other than censuses and b-m-d records (or parish records prior to censuses and civil registration).
