Hi Listers Not sure if I'm the only one to just find about this but thought it might be worth sharing - http://books.google.com/books What is Google Book Search? Search the full text of books to find ones that interest you and learn where to buy or borrow them. How does Google Book Search work? Book Search works just like web search. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Clicking on a book result, you'll be able to see everything from a few short excerpts to the entire book, depending on a few different factors. I typed in 'Challis +Sawston' in the search for full text and found an obituary for my 5x Gt Grandfather in 'The Gentleman's Magazine' of 1816. Under a page heading of 'Obituary; with Anecdotes of remarkable Persons' it gives the following paragraph : Aged 64, Mr Thomas Challis, farmer of Sawston, near Cambridge, much esteemed; in all the duties of life, he was just, friendly and affectionate. He has left a widow and large family to lament the loss of a dear husband and an affectionate father. A much fuller picture of a man I previously only looked at as Farmer/Husband/Father to 8 with dates of birth, bap and burial ! Hope someone else finds a little gem. I'm off to search some of my other family name and location combinations :-) Regards Denise
Denise Thanks for sharing that about Google Books - I had heard of it but had no idea one could find obituaries. I have a George Challis in my tree who married Louisa Barker and they lived in Sawston. George was an Auctioneer and they had no children. I have no dates on George as Louisa is my direct line but she was born abt 1860 in Lea, Derbyshire. Any connection do you think?
