Hi Thelma, Thanks for looking for me, I'll investigate them further and see if they lead to a potential candidate. It is clearly Esther on the 1871 census (Herts / Barley / District 6 / Page 9 on Ancestry). From the 1861 census I can see William living as a lodger in Foulmire ( Cambs / Foulmire / D6 / Page 25) so this is presumably where he met Esther. On the 1901 census, Esther stated her place of birth as Great Shelford. I believe this to be accurate, as she stated this as well in the 1861 census (Cambs / Great Shelford / D1 / Page 37). Looking through the 1851 census, there are a couple of candidates, but I believe the most likely is Esther Course (Age 15) on Cambs / Foulmire / D10a / Page 6. I've found this Esther's christening record on the IGI. I couldn't find any record of a marriage to William Arnold, which I've found in the BMD index in 1864. What do you reckon? Looks like I'll have to buy William / Esther's marriage certificate! Tony, This does seem to be the likely pairing - but the certificate would confirm it. Have you got the children of William & Esther? If you enter William's full name and just 'Esther' in the parents sections of IGI, then just enter the region, country & county, it will bring up five of them. Aye, I've added it to the list of certificates i need to obtain :) I've got their children (one of which is my Gt Gt Grandmother), I was trying to track down Esther's roots to complete the Arnold connection to me. Thanks again :) T Thelma Wigley wrote: > Tony, > > This does seem to be the likely pairing - but the certificate would confirm > it. > > Have you got the children of William & Esther? I think you have to be really careful here as there seem to have been 2 sets of William & Esther ARNOLD in the same area at that time. Both show up in the 1871 with one pair both born in Shelford and the other with William born in Whittlesford and Esther born in Foulmire. Pair 1: Both born Shelford, Cambs with William an Ag Lab. Appeared in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 living in Great Shelford. In 1871 both living with Thomas & Lydia FLITTON. Camdex has a marriage for a William ARNOLD married to an Esther FLITTON in 1864 which looks like this pairing. Pair 2: William born Whittlesford and a baker, and Esther/Hester born Foulmire. Were in Barley in 1871 and 1881, and Esther/Hester was in Barley in 1891 as a widow. I can't see her in 1901. In each of 1871, 1881 and 1891 she consistently gave her place of birth as Foulmire and age as 34/45/55 giving an approximate year of birth of 1836. Camdex has no entry for them but FreeBMD shows a marriage in Dec quarter 1861 in Royston Reg District (which covers Fowlmere/Foulmire and Barley) of a William ARNOLD to either an Esther Sarah COURSE or an Emma WOODS. There is also a death in 1895 in Royston Reg District of a Hester Sarah ARNOLD age 58 which seems to back the 1861 marriage as the correct one for this pair. You could always get a birth certificate for the child that you know for sure is in your direct line and see what the mother's maiden name is from that before getting a potentially wrong marraige certificate.
