Getting back to the subject in hand - I imagine that way back in the past, very few people would have had expensive coffins - they would have rotted down fairly quickly, and the site would have been reused. You only have to look at a parish burial register, then go and look at the site of the graveyard to realise this. Green burials would appear to be nothing new.
