Looking at different censuses it would seem that Joseph was Rebecca's illegitimate son who was brought up as Joseph GRAY. His wife, Eliza, died in 1849 and in 1851 he was living with his mother-in-law in Whittlesey. So it would appear that he was at the very least a half-brother of Mary Ann GRAY.
