    3. Hello, I am new to this list, but not to lists in general or genealogy. Finally, after years of dead ends I think I have narrowed down some places of birth from Cambridgeshire to something possibly helpful. Now I am stuck again because Googling/GENUKIing/LDS Batch Numbering have all left me high and dry so I wondered if someone with local knowledge could suggest a way forward: My great great great grandparents were William GATHARD & Mary nee FISHER. I know this from the birth certificate of my great great grandfather James Frederick GATHARD in January 1849 in London. I have traced William & Mary in 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. William died in 1877 and I have not found Mary in 1881 census (maybe she died, remarried or is hiding under a mistranscript of surname). I have not found them in 1841 census, although I know a child, William, was born about 1840 in Clerkenwell. William's date of birth varies from about 1804-1809 and is given as Cambridgeshire, Gayhornd? and Gyham. Mary's date of birth is consistent at around 1820 and is given as Cambridgeshire, Wickford and Cambridge. This morning I found what I think is their marriage in 1st qtr of 1838 in North Witchford registration district. The obvious answer is to apply for the certificate and wait whilst they issue and pray that the postal strike ends etc. However, I am really confused about all these places and don't want to spend money on a certificate if it is not the right one. I have nothing I can use as a proviso to prevent the wrong certificate being issued. >From CAMDEX I have a reference 338/CM01 01/27/2 and wondered if that would tell me the church/venue more precisely (I am used to the UKBMD references which tell you venue and book and entry number), if I just understood the reference? So, I wondered is anyone has any bright ideas? Does anyone know how to decode the reference above? Is it blatantly obvious when you know where these places are (or rather what they actually are) that it's right or completely a stretch? Maybe somebody out there already has these two on their tree and can confirm details. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give. Best wishes Sherry Landa (23170, Viersat, FRANCE)

    3. Hi Sherry, I suspect the area that William is from is Guyhirn, which is about 5 miles from March, Cambridgeshire. March is also covered by the North Witchford registration District. As to the child born in Clerkenwell, I found this on Ancestry.com ... Name: William Gathard Record Type: Baptism Birth date: 26 September (presumably 1841) Date: 17 Oct 1841 Father's Name: William Gathard Mother's Name: Mary Gathard Residence: 165 Saffron Hill Father's Occupation: Labourer Parish: Saint James, Clerkenwell Borough: Islington County: Middlesex Note in margin: Very Poor EB (presumably Edward Bull who officiated the ceremony) These children may or may not also be connected to the family: Alfred Gathard, Baptism 29 Jan 1860, William Gathard, Mary Gathard, Saint Marylebone Westminster Mary Alice Gathard, Baptism 29 Jan 1860 William Gathard, Mary Gathard, Saint Marylebone Westminster Hope something in there helps, and I'd feel reasonably sure that you have the right marriage certificate details, so apply for it and keep your fingers crossed that the Royal Mail gets its act together soon.
