I am researching Thomas Mark MITCHELL born: 1833, Peterborough, UK married: 1855 to Sarah HOGG Parish Church Whitby, UK. emigrated: to New Zealand 1874 with wife and children died: 20 July 1888 Sydney Australia My brickwall is Thomas' father's name that being either James or George MITCHELL. Recorded on Thomas' marriage certificate his father is recorded as George MITCHELL however on Thomas's death certificate his father is recorded as James MITCHELL Can anyone suggest how I can work out who was Thomas MITCHELL's father. It would have been Thomas himself who gave his father's name as George when he married. The name James on Thomas' death certificate would have been given by someone else. Of the two sources I would place much greater reliance on what Thomas had to say. Oddly I can't find Thomas in either of the 1841 or 1851 censuses, which would be the easiest place to settle who his father was. There's no baptism on the IGI which isn't surprising as very few Northants parish records have been extracted onto the IGI, making Northants one of the more difficult counties to research online.
