Mark Cornwell is certainly a very common Cambridgeshire name, especially in the villages to the north and east of the city of Cambridge. A good guide to the distribution in the early 20th century is on roll of honour, which is pretty well complete for Cambridgeshire. My mother's maiden name is Cornwell, and they came mostly from in and around Histon, to at least back into the 18th century. They tended to have very big families! However, be aware that they show up on census data as Cornwell, Cornell, Cornal, Cornhile and even Cromwell. One of my ancestors in 19th Century Histon is shown living next door to his brother's family, and they are given slightly different surnames. I have also seen it often in graveyards along the Cambridgeshire border with Norfolk and Suffolk, but that must be a different, richer branch of the family, because I doubt that any of my lot would have afforded a gravestone. Not sure if there will be any connection but my ex-wife's family were CORNWELLs. They hailed from the 1800, at least, from the Welney area in Cambridgeshire/Norfolk border area Regards, Bruce -----Original Message----- From: eng-cambridgeshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-cambridgeshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Simon Sent: 12 October 2009 18:40 To: eng-cambridgeshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-CAMS] CORNWELL surname - Newmarket area?
