    3. Hi. Thought I would check in to the list again to see if anything new had surfaced. Looking for information on James BUTLER. >From the archives; JAMES BUTLER Born QUY, Cambridgeshire Served in 43rd Foot Regiment; Royal Newfoundland Veterans Discharged aged 30 . Royal Newfoundland Date range: 1826 - 1840 James married Eliza GRAINGER (nee Hornidge/Horridge/Hornedge) bc1819 Sheffield in Stow, 1848. He shows up in the 1851 census with his family and Eliza's two sons from a previous marriage to William Grainger. James came to Aus in 1852 as a "Pensioner Guard" looking after the convicts, on the Earl Dalhousie. Don't know anything about what he might have done in the 43rd Foot and don't know anything about his parents, grandparents etc. Any information would be appreciated. rgds Phil..... Qld Aus.....

    3. Hi Phil. Well I have been doing a bit of research and using a process of elimination here...... I had a look at the 1851 census and then found three possible James Butlers on the 1841 census. AND looking these places up on google maps and as follows (1841 & google maps) James 1809 born Cherry hinton Cambs (3.9 miles from Stow Cum Quy) James 1811 born Witchford Cambs (16.4. miles from Stow Cum Quy) James 1816 born Great shelford (7.5 miles from Stow Cum Quy) So Back to the 1851 1. James born Great shelford on the 1841 census is on the 1851 census with wife Susannah - and children and seeing as your James is with Eliza and children in 1851 - this eliminates him. He is the one 1816 on 1841 census and 1814 on 1851 2. The James 1809 on the 1841 census (Cherry Hinton), 1811 on the 1851 and 1808 on the 1861 appears lodger in all instances. 3. The James 1811 on the 1841 census and 1812 on the census with Eliza Grainger nee Hornedge is the nearest date wise and the only one that seems logical as he doesn't appear on the 1861 and is not married to someone else. OK from here I went to Freebmd setting the parameters for a marriage between 1841-1851 (censuses) for james Butler to Eliza Grainger (also Granger, also Horn* - asterisk takes in anything from Horner to Hornedge/Hornidge etc) Nothing for any of them except for one 1848 September Quarter, Cambridge Registration district........Volume 14, page 5....... Ok married after first son Thomas was born....perhaps never bothered to marry, or married when he transferred to Australia or joined the 43rd foot......or any number of reasons. SO I suggest 1. Get the marriage certificate - this will tell you the fathers names if nothing else. 2. Get the parish records out next for Witchford & Stow Cum Quy...... Both Parish registers are available to order through your local LDS Family history centre for $5 . Then database all the BUTLERS......I database all my lot because they move around a lot.....want some tips on that, then holler off line. 3. I googled the 43rd Foot Regiment and apparently the records are kept at the National archives. QUESTIONS Have you 1. Searched the archives in Australia for records regarding service here? 2. Lds has the BMD's to search on fiche for Australia, Nsw Vic & SA.........Tasmania is slowly putting things online, so google for Tasmanian Archives - have you searched these? 3. The Libraries here in Oz have quite wonderful convict registers and archival stuff to do with convicts. NOTE - there is a tree on ancestry that has information on this family........yours or Not????????? If not PLEASE do your own research and use other peoples as a guide only. I hope all this helps hon. Happy hunting Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia JAMES BUTLER Born QUY, Cambridgeshire Served in 43rd Foot Regiment; Royal Newfoundland Veterans Discharged aged 30 .
