Hello List Members, Am new to the list and am looking for any info, or records of the location of Powelltor or Powellton, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire England. Also the Powell families of Robert Powell born 1508, m. Johane Dobson, William Powell, born 1545 Stutney, Cambridgeshire, England m. Jane Jones, John apHowell born 1574, Powelltor, Suffolk England, m. Mrs. apHowell, Thomas Powell born 1600, Powelltor, m. Elizabeth Welles, William Powell, born 1620 in Chickahonniny, Virginia, m. Elizabeth Gorsuch (1st marriage), Elizabeth Lawrence (2nd marriage), & maybe Mary Coghill. Info is so sketchy with the early settlers of Virginia in 1608, and we know a Nathaniel Powell came at this time, and maybe a Captain Powell, with a John Smith, but Nathaniel Powell and his family were killed by the Indians in 1622, and a Thomas Powell, a brother of Nathaniel came to Virginia, to claim his brothers land rights, that another William Powell had claimed rights to, but was found to not being related to the Nathaniel Powell family. We have 11 submitters in the Powell DNA Project, and they are in Haplogroup "T". We are trying to find the beginnings of this family, and are looking for a family connection to the above families mentioned, to a Lewis R. Powell, and his brother Pressly Powell. both born in Virginia somewhere, 1792, and 1787. Am thanking anyone in advance for any records, or info they might be able to help with. Hi Patricia ! I had never heard of a village with this name in the East Anglian region of Britain - I looked on two different very detailed road maps of East Anglia which both have good indexes and there is no sign of it at all; also nothing like it appears in "How to Find Suffolk Towns & Villages" - published by the Suffolk Family History Society in 2000. A useful website for searching for parishes is "Parloc" - the 'Parish Locator' programme which you can find at http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html I hope that this helps !
