I would recommend you go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp and find your local centre (which will include a phone number) and give them a call. The answers to your questions may depend on what resources they have and what you want to see. For example parish registers would be on film and they would have to send away for those, so you would need to order them in advance. On the other hand if you want to access Ancestry or something like that they would probably have computers to allow you to do that. It would also depend on where you live and what region you are studying. If you live local you may find it easier to visit the local record office whoses local resources are likely to be more comprehensive. If you use the LDS in England there is a charge of £7.50 for every film that you have to order. Regards Peter
