www.pro-online.pro.gov.uk/ I have not tried it, but believe it is a free site for searching, but will cost a few dollars to view the will. I think you must mean the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury. The records relating to West Suffolk are held at the Records Office in Bury St Edmunds; those for East Suffolk are at the office in Ipswich. The Suffolk Records Office in Lowestoft microfiche copies of the Archdeaconry Court records. Some Suffolk Wills were also proved in the Norwich Consistory Court and these are held in the Norfolk Records Office in Norwich. Is there any way from the coding for the index to tell if the record is East or West Suffolk? Thanks Liz Harrison In a message dated 6/12/2009 2:49:24 P.M. Hi Can anyone tell me where to look or how to begin looking for old Wills please Thanks Fay in Oz
Does anyone know how to get pre-1858 wills from the Perogatory Court of Sudbury? I've found the file number but looking at the PRO site and others it sends you to there is nothing clear on where to find the actual documents and not just another index. How old is old? Pre 1858 you can look for PCC wills at the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ , which tend to be those of richer people, and you can also check with the local records office to see if they have a copy of a will proved locally. See the TNA guides at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/wills/?WT.hp=Wills for more detail David On Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 11:05 AM, Fay Cooke <faysy@bigpond.com> wrote: > Hi > > Can anyone tell me where to look or how to begin looking for old Wills > please > > Thanks > Fay in Oz > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
"Fay Cooke" <faysy@bigpond.com> wrote : > Can anyone tell me where to look or how to begin looking for old Wills > please Pre-1858 Wills could be in a variety of places. Wills were the responsibility of the Established Church and were proved in Ecclesiastical Courts, exactly which having jurisdiction being dependent upon where property was located. Post-1858 Wills are all available from the Probate Registry and indexes to them can be found in records offices and some other repositories, as well as at FHCs. I believe some FHSs overseas also have copies of the index. There are several useful gudies at thr TNA website. See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=168 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=220 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=219 Pre-1858 Wills proved at Canterbury (PCC Wills) can be searched on and downloaded from the TNA website. Some London Wills are now similarly available on the LMA website : http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/ There are also some useful booklets, particularly one by Jeremy Gibson and Else Churchill "Probate Jurisdictions: Where to look for Wills". This is published by the FFHS and should be available through their on-line bookshop : http://www.genfair.co.uk/ John B Leic., Eng
Hi Gloria I think you mean the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ The Wills available are those from the PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills (1384 - 1858)) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp?WT.hp=Wills Although there are wills for people from all over the Country they are not the only wills for the period before 1858, however its worth noting there are 9170 wills with Cambridgeshire mentioned in the index There are some very good research guides on the National Archives See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?WT.lp=gs-researchguides&j=1 Scroll down to W Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > www.pro-online.pro.gov.uk/ > I have not tried it, but believe it is a free site for searching, but will > cost a few dollars to view the will. > Gloria, also in Oz.
Hi Fay What time frame ? Pre 1858 or Post ? Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi > > Can anyone tell me where to look or how to begin looking for old Wills > please > > Thanks > Fay in Oz
Where and when? The PRO site mentioned by Gloria has Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills up to 1858. Most of these will be proved at this court because the testator had property in more than one county. They can be downloaded for GBP3.50 See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp Other wills were proved at local courts. In the case of Cambs there were two courts at least and indexes to these wills are held at the Cambridgeshire Record Office, from whom you can also get copies of the wills. After 11 January 1858 Wills and Administrations (Admons) were proved at the Principal Probate Registry in London or at the District Probate Registries. The indexes for these are available in annual volumes. These Probate Indexes are available for inspection at First Avenue House, 47-49 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6NP. The Indexes include a brief account of the main details, names, address, date and place of death, occupation of deceased, executors and total amount of the effects. This is still not as good as seeing a copy of the Will. Until 1870 the Wills and Administrations were indexed separately and this should be born in mind when searching the indexes. If there was not a Will there could be an Administration which is a record of the total amount of the estate complete with relative dates of the death and administration with the names of the administrators. York, like many other cities has a District Probate Registry. Copies of Wills for England and Wales can be ordered, but the Indexes cannot be inspected here. Copies of Wills for nearly everyone can be ordered at the cost of £5.00 from the York Probate Sub-Registry in Dean's Court, York. The few exceptions are Royal ones. The copies are sent to you by post. They vary considerably in length and the later ones are typed. It is important to note that it could take time for a Will to be proved. There may be copies of these indexes in Libraries in Australia, but someone else will probably advise you on this when Australia wakes up to a new day in a few hours time!! Hope this helps John --- On Fri, 12/6/09, Gloria <smith-thompson@bigpond.com> wrote: From: Gloria <smith-thompson@bigpond.com> Subject: Re: [ENG-CAMS] Re Wills To: eng-cambridgeshire@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, 12 June, 2009, 12:08 PM www.pro-online.pro.gov.uk/ I have not tried it, but believe it is a free site for searching, but will cost a few dollars to view the will. Hi Alan, Thank you for your information. There were many ARNOLDs living at Newton. The line I am researching is that of a John Tod ARNOLD son of John ARNOLD and Catherine TODD, who were married in Newton in 1803. John and his wife Eliza and two children Sophia and William migrated to Australia on the 'Caroline' in 1853 and also settled in Paterson area. Upon embarkation he said that he 'had a brother (in the colony) living in the Sydney district'. I have not been able to identify this brother. His son William became a prominent businessman in the Newcastle / Waratah area. Regards Terry
Hi everyone, Is any one researching the Whitby family of Wimpole? I am especially interested in Frederick Whitby who married Elizabeth Wilmot/ Willmott on March 8. 1873 at the parish church Wimpole. Jeanette

One of my French relatives from the racing world in Chantilly, where my mother grew up, has told me that Eliza Clift (daughter of the jockey Bill Clift) married one of my relations, Benjamin Charles Planner b Newmarket 1804 (trainer),d Newmarket 1888. They had 2 children William Charles Planner (a trainer in Chantilly) and Charles Planner. However, I just found a reply on the CLIFT Family Genealogy forum from December 09, 2001 from a Keith Dutton that contradicts this but his email address bounces. Does anyone know how I can contact him please? I haven't found their marriage which would have been abt 1829 or earlier. However, I would really like to find out more about Eliza's father William CLIFT who was a famous jockey who won the Epsom derby 5 times. Can anyone tell me where I might find any information on him? I have googled and really only come up with his winners and a couple of lines about him. I would like to try and find Eliza's birth too so I can verify my information. Any help will be gratefully received :) Carolyn
Hello Terry I have Samuel Arnold and Elizabeth Howe in my database. Their daughter Eliza was born 1845 at Newtown By Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. She and her family emigrated in 1848 on the "Thetis" to NSW. They settled in the Paterson area (Allyn River/Martins Creek). Samuel died in 1846 and Elizabeth married David Parish in 1847 before they immigrated. A John Arnold born 1804 and this Samuel Arnold born 1804 both had parents called Thomas Arnold and Mary Thompson and lived in Newton by Cambridge. Regards Alan
Hi Paula Thanks so much for the link which is absolutely fantastic. I have precious few photos and even less pictures of my family so this is just amazing. Thanks again. Deborah
