Hi I am researching the RIPLEY family who lived in Cambridge. Charlotte STOAKLEY married John Frederick RIPLEY in 1864 at St Paul's Church, Cambridge; they were both born in 1844. I have been told that they had 12 children, but so far I have only been able to find 10. FreeREG has only baptism entry for this family - that of Frederick Theodore RIPLEY on 14 Jul 1867 at St Sepulchre, Cambridge. Does anyone have any information which might be useful to me? I would be very grateful to receive any information about any of their descendants. Many thanks, Lesley
Simon The introduction to the CFHS CD/PR/009 for Holy Trinity Ely makes no reference to St. Peters, so it's not possible to say from this source. Hopefully an official of the CFHS will have more background to help you Bob Burns -----Original Message----- From: eng-cambridgeshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-cambridgeshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Simon Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 11:43 AM To: eng-cambridgeshire@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-CAMS] Ely Holy Trinity and St Peter's church Can someone tell me if the CD-rom of Ely Holy Trinity 1559-1938 includes the records of St Peter's church? St Peter's is in Broad Street, within Holy Trinity parish. It was opened in 1889, but I believe that it had the status of a donative church rather than a chapel of ease. Being a donative means that it might have been attached to St Mary's parish rather than Holy Trinity. When I was talking to the churchwarden a few months back, he was not really sure where the parish records were - we looked through all the drawers in the vestry, but we couldn't find them. Then he though they were probably in the 'crypt' - a coal hole under the floor of the church currently used for storing junk. St Peter's was,and is, licenced for baptisms, but not for marriages. Up until 1938, when Holy Trinity and St Mary's parishes were merged, several generations of my family were baptised in St Peter's but married in the Lady Chapel of the cathedral. I'd be keen to see chapter and verse on both events. Thanks Simon for the valuable input on Eliza and John Bishop's burials. It seems in initially asking about my grans father also named John Bishop I have in fact gained missing information on his parents. I am grateful for the assistance being not from England let alone Cambridgeshire. As to the "U' if as is suggested by Simon the "U" is in fact a transcription error it will mean this is twice I have had John Powell Bishop's details transcribed in error. It took quite a while to find his and Eliza's marriage which turned out to have him listed as "Jane Powell Bishop". On viewing the original page online it was clear Jane was in fact John. I know however how easy it can be to type something like this in error. Volunteers to a marvelous job. Can some answer my most nagging question as to whether there is some source out there that may provide newpaper records of obituaries in 1904 around the Coates area or maybe Peterborough. John Bishop (jnr) was buried in the Coates churchyard 25th April 1904. As he was a policeman at the time I am not sure if the Coates police would have been present or his death noted in the newspaper due to his involvement. Again I do not know if he has a headstone. His wife remarried but is also buried in the same churchyard possibly with her 2nd husband. This couple was Mary Elizabeth and Thomas Henry Neal who died 14 April 1959 and 7th Aug 1954 respectively. As these are later burials there may be a headstone but as I am not in England I do not know how to check. Thanks once again. Dawn I had a look at the Ely Cemetery burial records, and Eliza Bishop was buried in Ely Cemetery on 29th April 1921. She died at Lynn Road in Ely, which may well be the same address as that John had died at, but Lynn Road is a long road. The Minister who read the burial service was a Rev. Timms. Eliza was buried in grave plot B76. This is indeed the same grave plot as John was buried in in 1904. John's burial service was read by the Rev. Huddleston. I can't help noticing that the original entry for John does not use the letter U in any category. Since they were both clearly buried in consecrated ground it can't possibly mean unconsecrated. Is it possible that the U is simply a transcription error? I have searched hundreds and hundreds of Ely cemetery records, and have never come across this U before. As I recall, the plots beginning with a B are those to the left of the path beyond the cemetery chapel. I won't be in Ely for a couple of weeks, but when I do I will try and see if plot B76 has a headstone. Thanks Joanne for the information on John Powell Bishop's burial at least that gives me a close approximation of his death date. I wonder if I contacted the Ely Council would they have further information on his burial as the cemetery is still being used. It would be amazing if he had as headstone. Not sure when Eliza Bishop, his wife died, but after 1901. I would expect she would be buried with him. Any clues? In answer to the "U" if the cemetery is setout like some here in Australia it may indeed mean nondenominational. I might suggest U means Unconsecrated . See the site shown for a discussion http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?12869-Unconsecrated-Ground Alternatively, U might not mean anything in this example at Ely. Hi Thanks you so much for all that information. It seems to make a lot of sence. The only question i have now is Was Charlotte and William Married before he died for her to become Charlotte Flowers? And does it say what the realationship is to Charlotte in the 1860 Census? I think i will send for the certificates and just see. It seem funny how Charlotte and Charles sailed on the ship with his future Wife and family. Ah, so it is! Thanks, Wendy. How silly of me not to notice. But if I had noticed, I would not have prompted such a splendid and generous reply from Ruth, and so every cloud has a silver lining! The new CD looks excellent. Can I just place on record that I think the Cambridgeshire Family History Society does a wonderful job. I regularly count my blessings that the vast majority of my ancestors come from Cambridgeshire - the strand from Kent are much harder work, despite the Medway Council's cityark resource. And as for the Essex lot, I just keep praying that I'll find them back across the border eventually.. :-) Simon Knott norfolkchurches.co.uk suffolkchurches.co.uk Finding CORNELL, CORNWELL, MORTLOCK, REYNOLDS, CARTER, ANABLE, STEARN, PAGE and CROSS in Cambridgeshire Finding KNOTT, WATERS, HARRELL and BOWLES in north-west Kent wendy doyle wrote: > Just to clear up a point on Simon's post about Cambridgeshire Baptism > Index - Shudy Camps is included. Just to clear up a point on Simon's post about Cambridgeshire Baptism Index - Shudy Camps is included. The confusion is possibly because Shudy Camps is indexed - in line with standard practice in Archives - under Camps, Shudy. To view a complete list of what is included in the 6th edition of indexes - baptisms, marriages & banns, and burials go to http://www.cfhs.org.uk/BaptismCDContents.html We are currently working on finishing the LAST parish register transcription for the County Within the next month a complete transcription of every Parish Register for the Counties of Cambridgeshire & the Isle of Ely - collated with the Bishop's and Archdeacon's Transcripts - will be available on CDrom See our Bookstall pages http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Bookstall/index.html for details The 7th edition of the baptism, marriage & burial indexes, which will include all Anglican parishes for all dates, will be out in the Autumn. My great-great-grandmother Mary Ann CARTER was born in Shudy Camps in 1841. She lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1939 at the age of 97. On the 1851 census, when she was nine years old, her parents are named as John and Rebecca Carter, both also born in Shudy Camps. John was 31, and Rebecca was 30. The only likely marriage for them on the FreeBMD is in the Linton registration district, which includes Shudy Camps, in 1840, between John CARTER and Rebecca LUCAS. I hastened at once to the Cambridgeshire Baptisms CD to look up John and Rebecca being born and hopefully baptised in about 1820, only to discover that the Parish Records of Shudy Camps are not included. I wonder if anyone with access to the Shudy Camps PRs would kindly check for me to see if John and Rebecca's baptisms are there, and confirm that Rebecca's maiden name was LUCAS. It would be great to know their parents' names. It is probable that they were married in Shudy Camps, so any information about that would also be gratefully received! Hello David, I have found a Charles Flowers born to a John and Ann at Bungay Suffolk bp 1836 or another 1839 Chesterfield Derbyshire . I know the dates are out but it might lead somewhere Hope these helps, Suffolk is on the border with Cambridgeshire. Sheila
Hi I contacted the Littleport Society a couple of times but never really got a reply from him. The couple i did get was to say he had been on holiday and come home to so many emails etc. I have been trying to find the right place to get Charles and Rachel marriage certificate to see if that has some answers but i am not sure how i go about that. As far as getting the death certificate i figured that if he diappeared from the clergy list then he must have left the contry. And with the age of William it doesnt really tie in either. On the New York Passenger lists there is a large Priest family plus Charlotte Elizabeth Flowers aged 23 with Charles Flowers aged 7 who arrived in NYC 30 Jun 1855 on the Yorktown, sailing from London. The two families are adjacent on the list. The youngest person in the Priest family is an infant Rachel. Parents are James and Harriet, he was a farmer. By the 1860 census Charlotte Flowers, 28, b Eng ,seems to have married a Joseph Irwin, 32, b Eng while Charles W. Flowers, aged 12, is in the household. They were living in Ward 20, NYC. By the same 1860 census the Priest family has moved to Perrysburg, OH where their name is spelled Prist. James and Harriet [Wyatt, see FreeBMD] are there along with all their children and Rachel, aged 5. [1851 has this family in Little Milton, Bucks.] The enlistment for Charles W. Flowers in the 21st OH Volunteer Infantry was at Findlay , Ohio which is south east of Perrysburg [about a 45 minute freeway ride today]. Ohio [and most] enlistment records only give age at time of enlistment; they asked very little information. Exact date of birth or death is mostly found in pension applications. The roster for Co. K, 21st OVI is on Google Books. Both the passenger list and census are consistent with Charles W. being born in 1848. He said he was 18 at enlistment in 1861. If born in 1845, he was only 16 and only 13 if born in 1848. Eighteen was the magic age for enlistment. He must have been born closer to 1845. In 1851 his apparent father Rev. William B. Flowers is unmarried, 21, and a student at St. John's College, Cambridge which matches your age of 16 if Charles was born in 1845 . William was from ?Tonington, Northamptonshire. He is at school in Brackley in 1841. I see from internet postings he was from Preston Capes and certainly seems to be the fellow who d. 1855 in Cornwall as he disappears from clergy lists then. IN the 1851 census at Sandhill, Littleport, Cambridgeshire there is a Hannah Cornwell 49, mar, b. Littleport, with her grandson CHARLES CORNWELL, 5, b Littleport, living with her. Bapts to John & Hannah Cornwell of Littleport include Susan 1823, Harriet 1821, Charles 1826 and Elizabeth 1827 - no Charlotte but could Charlotte be Elizabeth? That would make her 18 when Charles was born. There is a matching birth for CHARLES CORNWELL June quarter 1845 at Ely reg. dist. which includes Littleport. Vol. 14, p. 53. This looks like your Charles W. Flowers was aka Charles Cornwell. This seems to match information given on the rootschat.com forum. I would order the certificate. Seems the parents weren't married & they were both very young in 1845. Since he was born in March 1845, he was probably conceived in the summer of 1844 - William B. Flowers would have been on school holidays perhaps and aged 15 [b. 1829], Charlotte may have been working somewhere and that is how they met. Certainly Charlotte and son Charles emigrated in 1855 the year WBF died in Cornwall. Perhaps a legacy funded the ticket. Also the marriage of Charles W. Flowers and Rachel Priest is on the IGI as 18 Apr 1871 in Wood County, Ohio. Perrysburg, where the Priests settled, is in Wood County. Interesting. Liane
Hi. I have been hitting a brick wall with this problem for years so i have decided to explore all known facts. My problem is finding the birth of my GG Grandfather. Charles William Flowers i have done a search for him and found a website on civil war soldiers and it has him born on March 8, 1845 at Littleport, Cambridgeshire,England but i can't find him.. On his death certificate it has Rev William Benedict Flowers as his father but i have traced his family and going by the dates he would have been 16 then becames a anglican minister and his Mother Charlotte Cornwall. Charles Fought in the Civil War for Ohio U.S.A and married rachel Priest they then came to New Zealand. I am wanting to get his birth certificate but because i don't no where he was born it is a little hard. Also another thing i find interesting is that Charles and Rachel had a son called William Benedict so there must be some tie somewhere. Are you able to help me?
