Dear Listers, Does anyone connect with this family of racehorse trainers (in Newmarket) and farmers (in Burwell) in the 1800s and early 1900s. I have some links to prove and/or disprove! Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in Cambridgeshire.
I am looking for information on the above families in Bassingbourn. John and Sarah Fay Hopkins had no children, but John was very active in town affairs (tax collector, surveyor, engineer, deacon, teacher) and I would like to find out when he and Sarah died and where they are buried. Sarah's sister, Harriett Fay, married Joseph Bone. The two had many children, some of whom lived with John and Sarah. Both families were in Bassingbourn in the 1851 Census. Is there anyone that can do 1861 and 1871 lookups? I do not find John nor Sarah in the 1881 Census and wonder if they had died. Any help, direction appreciated. Janet Hopkins Arizona

To date, I have always thought my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother, Hannah came from Marston Moretaine in Bedfordshire as her place of birth on all the census records from 1851 to 1881 state place of birth as "Marson", Bedfordshire. There is a christening for a Hannah WALTON, dau. of William & Mary, on the IGI for 13 October 1811 at Marston Moretaine which is in the right time frame and ties in with the name of her 1st born, William Walton CAWTHORN.. Hannah would have married my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Joseph CAWTHORN of Emneth, in about 1830-1833, as their first child, William **Walton**, was baptised at Upwell St Peter's on 14 August 1834 + their next 2 children in 1836 & 1840. BUT I cannot find any trace of their marriage - this is one of my brickwalls :) BUT on looking through some old notes taken at the Fenland Museum whilst looking through the films of the Upwell parish registers, I noted that there seemed to be an awful lot of WALTON entries - so could Hannah have been from Upwell instead? Any advice, suggestions gratefully received, as always. Is there anyone who can give me some info on the book the "Whole Duty of Man." My family brought this book over from England to America in the mid 1850's. In the book there is a list of births, deaths and marriages from the 1700's up to the late 1800's. Why would they record the data in this book and not a bible? Was it issued by the Church? Hi Derek, I don't have a connection to the Chamberlain family but I do have ancestors who came from Lincolnshire, hence having some records for that county. The BVRI cd like the IGI has been transcribed by volunteers etc. so there could be mistakes in reading some of the names. You would really have to look at the original records yourself to be 100% sure of the transcriptions. Do you have a LDS Family History Centre near you? I don't know whether you are familiar with the BVRI's but they don't cover all areas & dates, but you can be lucky. There was another marriage at Whaplode which may help in deciding the correct name Hog/Nog as it seems that maybe two sisters married into the Chamberlain family CHAMBERLAIN Martin, son of William Chamberlain married Sarah Molsher HOGG,18, daughter of Henry Molsher Hogg. 28th October 1839. The first baptism to appear in the Whaplode registers for children of William & Ann was in 1809. CHAMBERLAIN Mary Ann 18th June 1809 CHAMBERLAIN John 20th September 1812 CHAMBERLAIN Martin 1st December 1816 CHAMBERLAIN Elizabeth 18th April 1819 CHAMBERLAIN Ann 20th January 1822 HARVEY Edward Pearson, son of Edward Harvey & Ann CHAMBERLAIN, daughter of William Chamberlain 5th January 1847 at Braceborough, Linc. I had another look on the National Burial Index and there were no entries for an Ann Chamberlain about 1848 in Linc. Re. baptism of William Chamberlain at Gedney-Hill, Linc. the only way I can confirm this at the moment is via the IGI site. The entry does come from the Parish registers, and it could well be your William. He could have been born in Thornley & baptised at Gedney-Hill. Best wishes, Jennie
Hello Jennie, Many thanks for email and extra data. We do have a FHS but it is some distance away from where we live, I may leave some things for my children to check later, as I am getting a bit old now to do too much racing around, I shall be 72 in June. I do appreciate what you have done. I am just hoping there may be someone out there who is a descendant of the same family that may be interested in making a connection. Thanks again. Hello Jennie, Many thanks for your very helpful email, which has really filled me in on a few details. I had the 1851 Census and the 1881 Census details of Whaplode Drove for CHAMBERLAIN but not the dates of births and deaths. My own great grandfather was HENRY MEADOWS CHAMBERLAIN, born 17.6.1838 at Whaplode Drove to William & Ann Chamberlain nee HOG ( the IGI had it as NOG - could you confirm the correct one if possible please) I have the marriage of William C. to Ann Hog on 29.11.1830 and am gathering that she died before 1848 when he married Alice Furnage, nee Barber who appears to have been a widow. You wouldn't have access to the Death of ANN CHAMBERLAIN would you? I have from IGI a record of a baptism of WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN on 11.6.1808 at Gedney Hill, Lincoln son of William - could you confim this? In the 1851 Census William Chamberlain states he was born at Thorney, Cambridgeshire and IGI gives a WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN married to ANN MEADOWS on 22.10.1807, at Thorney but no birth record there. It seems as though this at Gedney Hill, Lincoln could be them, as it is about eight months after the marriage. Maybe they were on the move, as I can't see the birth of that WILLIAM at Thorney either, only there is one at Meldreth, Cambs. on 11.5.1783 son of JOHN CHAMBERLAIN and ELIZABETH DRAYCOTT married on 29.7.1782 at Oakham, Rutland. The JOHN CHAMBERLAIN was son of a WILLIAM & ANN possibly GATES married 8.11.1862 at Meldreth, Cambs. but I can't see a baptism for JOHN. There are a few missing dates on IGI but the CHAMBERLAIN's go back to a WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN married to ELIZABETH JURDEN at Oakham, Rutland on 29.10.1719.Thankd for all this interesting new data, I do appreciate your kindness, are you connected to the Chamberlain family yourself? Bye for now, Kindest regards, Derek in Tasmania, Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jennie Hudson" <whitewav@powerup.com.au> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 06, 2004 4:45 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-CAMB] WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN m ANN MEADOWS at Thorny, Cambridgeshire. c.1807 Any connections? > Hi Derek, > > The 1861 Census entry for the only William Chamberlain at Whaplode Drove is as follows. > > 5 Chapel Gate, Whaplode Drove, Linc. > CHAMBERLAIN William 53 Head Ag.
